You are the Light of the World
Have you ever been in a horrendous storm where the lights flickers and then it’s as black as midnight? You’re scared and try to feel your way throughout the house to find a flashlight. Your uncertainty leads you to worry and you call out for help.
This is how 60% of our nation’s fourth graders feel everyday because they struggle to know the secret treasure of knowledge. Children are calling out to anyone who will listen. Each child learns differently and as one of Ben Franklin’s famous quotes once said:
Children shout out in different ways. Some struggling students make excuses why they don’t want to read, often responding: “reading is boring, I don’t like reading.”Some children can read but can’t visualize what they are reading.
Reading is a treasure that creates images and pictures in our minds. It’s where we learn to be creative, and think outside the box. It’s where we can make sense of the world around us. Remember the feeling of the darkness you felt when the lights went out? When you see a child struggling help him or her to get the help they need so they too can succeed.
We can help children by teaching in a way that they understand. By teaching phonics they are able to decode words, understand the word families, and and read fluently. Our brains look for patterns and sounds in words,
We are all the light of the world by our talents, our knowledge, and our love for others. Let’s give the struggling students a chance to shine a light on on them so they too can shine brightly and explore and learn about the world around them.

9 年Great post. I love the authentic approach; remove the focus on too much process and replace it with genuine focus on people (in this case students).
