Are you a lifelong learner?
In my early twenties, I stumbled upon a profound idea that completely shifted my outlook on career planning. It was during my college days when I heard Barbara Walters share her unconventional approach to setting career goals. She didn't believe in rigid five or ten-year plans; instead, she emphasized the importance of continuously developing and expanding one's skill sets. Her reasoning was because she wanted to be ready to walk through any door that might open for her.
Inspired by this perspective, I embarked on a journey of perpetual self-improvement. Beyond the confines of formal education, I consumed books on leadership, attended workshops, and sought out mentors who could guide me through the intricacies of leading others. Online courses and webinars became regular fixtures in my quest to broaden my knowledge base. I challenge myself to try new tasks, such as public speaking or blogging, and in the past year, I published my first book. (I’m on Amazon, baby!)
Simply put, I’m a lifelong learner and find joy, passion, and reward in doing so.
Here are 3 steps to help you grow yourself professionally:
Step 1: Embrace Diverse Learning Experiences
If life has taught me anything, it is that there is a lesson to be learned anywhere and at any time. Something I never imagined I would do is run for public office. My school board term of 4 years expires this December. It was hard work, especially leading at this level during a global pandemic, but I have learned much because of this experience.

Step 2: Build a Robust Network of Mentors and Peers
Recognizing the value of diverse perspectives, I actively built a network of mentors and peers. These relationships went beyond superficial connections; they became a source of guidance and inspiration. I also meet regularly with a professional coach to ensure I am making sound work decisions and actions.
Step 3: Foster a Culture of Reflection and Feedback
If you cannot embrace your vulnerabilities, you will always struggle surpassing the challenges. I understand that acknowledging strengths and weaknesses is integral to personal development. Embracing feedback, whether positive or constructive, became a catalyst for my continuous evolution as a leader.
My hope is that my own journey will encourage you with yours. Whether you are climbing the corporate ladder, leading a small team, or steering the course for an entire organization—all are made more manageable by committing to ongoing growth. Embracing change, cultivating diverse skills, nurturing meaningful connections, and reflecting on my journey, has helped me navigate this unpredictable terrain of my career with confidence and resilience.
