Are you LEADING or MANAGING your business?
Have you ever stopped to consider how you, the owner of your business, is contributing to the stagnant or slow growth in your business?
A core differentiator I have seen in the businesses that scale vs. the businesses that stay stuck is that the owner of the business is constantly evolving and growing their skillset, leadership characteristics and surrounding themselves with high performance talent.
This takes intentional action to uplevel yourself and let go of the control so you can create space to operate at the highest level.
So what is the difference between managing and leading your business?
Here is a simple breakdown of the difference in behaviors when it comes to a manager vs. a leader.
Manager = staying close to the day to day operations, needing to understand all the details about every decision being made, is a planner and organizer in the day to day tasks. Your team “works” for you.
Leader = setting the broader vision, aligning the strategy and people against growth, looking for market opportunities. Your team follows you.
The truth is, businesses require both a leader and a management level to sustain. Someone creating the high level opportunities, setting the vision and also an operational level of managing the day to day to achieve the benchmarks and goals set in place.
Here are a few questions to consider:
- Do you have clarity on the organizational structure required to take your business to the next level?
- Where are you spending the majority of your time/capacity?
- Do you currently have high performance talent in your organization? Are expectations clear and are you driving high level results?
- What do you need to let go of in order to create space to step into a new level of leadership for your organization?

2 年I always appreciate the way people express the difference between manager and leader. I agree with your distinction. I might add that Leaders are working with emotional system more than the logistical one. Both matter. Thanks Jackie!
