ARE YOU A LEADER FOLLOWING OTHER’S VALUES OR YOUR OWN?

Did you think that moving into your new leadership role would feel fantastic? You’ve worked so hard for it – the promotion was meant to be your greatest achievement. But the day to day reality of being responsible for your team and your firm’s success is actually requiring you to think and behave in a manner that feels uncomfortable.

Here’s a quick test to find out:

• Do you feel that being a leader means packing away your personal values?
• Do you feel that you’re acting out a leadership role that isn’t you, that you’re going to be ‘found-out’ as the imposter that you secretly believe yourself to be, or that you have to steel yourself for the working day ahead?
• Do you feel deskilled, out of your depth or under siege?
• Does leading others feel like herding cats?

Your values are the ship you sail in.?When you live in line with your values the ship is sound – it can weather the strong currents and storms life brings.?When your values are compromised by yourself or others the ship falters, it leaks and becomes unstable and likely to sink.?At human level stress, anxiety, depression and physical ill health are the result of your values being ignored or trampled.

If you answered yes to any of those it is time to recognise that you are the common denominator in your life and that it is important to take radical responsibility for everything you think, say and do. It’s time to take control as the leader of your own life.?Only then can you lead others effectively.?
