Are you lacking knowledge or execution?

Are you lacking knowledge or execution?

Like there are "many roads that lead to Rome” or “more than one way to skin a cat”, for business owners trying to achieve their goals, there are multiple avenues to do so.

However, business owners will often invest in the wrong resources or come to the wrong conclusions about what they need to help them and this can be a costly exercise.

So, this article is to help you get more clear on what resources your business may need so you can protect your investments and see greater results sooner.

Knowledge Gap:

Have you caught yourself saying…

“I don’t know what to do”

“What we’re doing isn’t working”

“We’ve done what ‘they’ said to do and it hasn’t worked”

These are textbook knowledge or expertise gaps. You don’t have the know-how (which is ok, you have your own expertise), to solve the problem at hand.

You might feel at a standstill, fed up with everything you’ve tried to-date, or what had worked previously isn’t working now and you’re not sure how or what to change to see the same or better results.

The good news I often find about those who present a knowledge gap is, you’re trying something and something is always better than nothing. You’re not quick to give up even if it feels like you should.?

You also have a wealth of experience of what hasn’t worked and while this is a bittersweet statement, this is often 80% of the way to discovering what does work. Remember Einstein and the lightbulb invention of 1000 steps. It takes not achieving something first before you do start achieving your desired outcomes.?

Execution Gap:

Do you find yourself saying…

“I’m too busy and inconsistent”

“We don’t have time to implement even if it has worked before”

“We have to focus on fulfilling client orders / projects / requests before we can do anything else”

If you’re trying to grow your business, you will have to do things you haven’t done, even when conditions aren’t ideal, like, you’re busy. Execution gaps can be frustrating because we all have such good intentions to do the do, but we’re lying to ourselves if we let this continue for months, years and even decades.

Imagine for a moment that your business focused on putting into action the things you know to do, where would your business be?

An execution gap is also painful when business owners believe they have a knowledge gap instead, because they (and their team) will spend more time and resources on learning when really, they just need to be applying more.

It’s vital to know the difference between the two and what your business really needs - and it can be that a combination of both is required.?

What To Do Next:

  1. Identify what gap you have (if it’s both, get specific on what and where)
  2. Make a plan to close that gap, openly discuss with your team or a business peer about what different steps you need to take which may include hiring expert guidance or team support
  3. Follow through on the plan (maybe obvious but a reminder for the non-action takers)
  4. Review your results and adjust accordingly

I expect this article brings more awareness to what type of support your business needs and possibly, where it could have been going wrong. Seeking knowledge when you simply need execution is costly, as is, hiring people to execute on ideas that don’t work for your business.
