You keep using that word...

Inigo Montoya, my favorite character in "The Princess Bride," says, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” Substitute "Inconceivable!" with "Productivity!" and that's our theme for this week.?
The simplest interpretation of inkjet productivity is the number of letter sized images produced per minute. This is a function of the imaging speed of the press times the number of letter images that can fit across the web, or sheet width, of the press. As simple as this sounds, even this measure can take you down a rabbit hole:??
Factor in that some presses run at multiple speeds and that you may not get the top quality at the top speed, and the math becomes very complex.
Then consider that the productivity the buyer of an inkjet press actually experiences is not just a function of the running speed of the press, it is also about the up-time of the press and a?host of other factors. The ultimate measure of productivity depends on the mix of business of the buyer as Pat McGrew M-edp discusses in "What do we mean by productivity?"

If you turn this productivity analysis around and look at it from a development perspective, you begin to understand why it's so important to talk (and listen) to customers about outcomes such "produce more output" instead of pushing solutions in terms of "speeds and feeds." That is Dan Adams ' message in his?latest chapter in our Growth and Innovation Series. I will let him tell you what the "faster horse fallacy is."
Another great debate is aluminum versus aluminium, and more importantly, the use of it in the print industry. Sean Smyth says it's high?time that we talk about the environmental impact?and outsized cost of element 13 in the periodic table. (Let's just say it, aluminium is an unlucky substance!)?
Do we think that the rising cost of aluminum and its environmental impact will cause printing companies and print buyers to move away from offset and towards digital? Perhaps even inkjet? Why that's inconceivable!

2 年Elizabeth: Interesting. If folks are still pushing "speeds & feeds" rather than more meaningful issues I guess things haven't changed much since I retired almost 6 years ago. In fact, it seems things haven't changed much since I got into the industry way back when (won't say when). BTW - the movie is very good but the book is MUCH better. So what else is new?

2 年Great article, Elizabeth! And I love your reference to Princess Bride. To that end, it's "inconceivable" that we can grow our businesses as rapidly as possible without understanding customer needs.
