Are you Investing: My 15-Year Identity Shift

This week, I read The Business of the 21st Century by Robert Kiyosaki. I dedicate at least an hour a day to personal development, and this book has reinforced something I’ve been reflecting on deeply: I’ve always had the mindset of an entrepreneur, even while working a 9-to-5 job.

Looking back, I realise this identity shift didn’t happen overnight—it’s been evolving over the past 15 years. My ex-husband and I made the difficult decision early on to invest, setting money aside to buy our first investment property. At the time, it felt like a practical move, but over the years, I’ve become more and more involved in managing and maximizing these investments. It wasn’t just about owning property; it was about learning how to make money work for me.

This week, one of my current tenants moved out, and I’ve been deep in the process of assessing the property—what needs fixing, what upgrades will add value, and how to position it for the next tenant. I’ve been planning how to allocate funds for new carpets and painting, navigating conversations with the real estate agent, and making decisions that will impact my financial future.

Fifteen years ago, I wouldn’t have seen myself as someone who could handle this. But now, it’s just part of who I am. And it’s a perfect reminder that our financial future is shaped by the small, consistent actions we take over time. We do the work now so we can reap the rewards later.

The Power of Identity Shifts

Kiyosaki talks about how true financial freedom comes from shifting your identity—from being an employee or self-employed to thinking like a business owner and investor. His Cashflow Quadrant model outlines four financial identities:

  • E – Employee: Trades time for a paycheck, valuing security but with limited income potential.
  • S – Self-Employed (Small Business Owner): Owns a job rather than a business; income is still tied to effort.
  • B – Business Owner: Builds a system that generates income with or without direct involvement.
  • I – Investor: Puts money to work, generating passive income and long-term wealth.

Most of us start in the E or S quadrant, and moving beyond it isn’t just about learning financial strategies—it’s about shifting our mindset. And don't get me wrong I have LONG way to go!! It’s about seeing opportunities differently, making decisions with long-term vision, and understanding that wealth isn’t built by trading time for money but by creating systems and leveraging assets.

Looking Forward

I’m incredibly grateful to my past self for having the confidence and foresight to start investing all those years ago. Because of that decision, I now have the skills and mindset to navigate property ownership, financial planning, and business growth. And just like I can look back and see how far I’ve come, I can also look ahead and know that five years from now, my coaching businesses will be in a completely different place—because I am committed to learning, growing, and taking action.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is financial freedom or business success. But the actions we take today set the foundation for where we’ll be in the future.

If there’s one thing, I want my readers to take away from this, it’s that transformation is possible for you too. Your future self will thank you for the steps you take now.

The right mindset, the right conversations, and the right people make all the difference. So, who are you surrounding yourself with? What conversations are you having? And what’s one small action you can take today to start shifting your financial future?
