You are an individual, not a category

You are an individual, not a category

You have unique DNA, skills, culture, gender, cognitive, physical differences, then any human before and after. No one who has ever existed will deal with the same circumstances and number of specific decisions you will make in your lifetime. Never overlook that you are unique and that you have a reason for being here. Our society quickly judges and places us all into categories. If you are from this part of the country, you must think this way, or the way you look puts a stereotype on you. When you are just a category, it diminishes your individuality, and you start to limit yourself based on others' perception of you.

Since you are unique, only one person on the planet is 100% certain what is going on in your head. Shouldn’t that person be an active participant in how he/she develops? We should simply pay attention to how we are growing and how can we encourage those around us. You are a mother, wife, daughter, nurse, nerd, yoga, wine connoisseur, volunteer at local shelter, lover of big bang theory, etc. Be all those qualities and do not conform to anyone but your true self.

What steps can you take to keep your individuality and not compare yourself with others?

Do you practice not judging others quickly and evaluate them based on their own merits?

If you want to be somebody, be you. Don't try to pretend to be someone that you know your not! Comparisons breeds fear and fear breeds competition and one-upmanship, both destructive... Excellent Subject and always a work in progress!! Thank you Michael!

Love this Michael Conteh, M.ED., BCBA! Too often, especially in career coaching and job search, we must try to 'fit' ourselves into a narrowly defined bucket or definition of the ideal candidate. Thank you for the reminder that we bring our whole selves and experiences to everything that we do.

Great article! Individuality is so important and sometimes overlooked in the work place. Personally I think continuing to build on my own personal passions and skills like yoga & cooking, can help in my self care journey. Loving your uniqueness is a form of self care!
