With you, I would like to reflect around the following question : 'what is value creation ?'
With you, I would like to reflect around the following question : 'what is value creation ?'
you may wonder why this question in particular ? Simply because, as any human being I guess, it is the background of what is driving me everyday when working : I need to do something good, something which is making sense to me, which is contributing positively to people, to society or to my environment, etc.
Somehow, as soon as I am convinced that I do this, my motivation is high. This high motivation is directly correlated with strong engagement at work, having a positive impact to business. Isn't it win-win for both individuals & business to find appropriate proposals ?
Lets nail down a bit the question now !
When 2 employees are exchanging on a topic with no direct application in their current business, is it Non value-Added activity ?
When following your intuition, you may do tasks which can be far from your core business. Is it a waste of time ?
Those questions are basic and I guess you may also experience them on your side.
When we are transforming data or building a product, we create value as it is contributing directly to what is delivered to the end customer. These tasks are a must and we shall not minimise them. For me, this is visible part of the iceberg.
However, I see here a trap being to much focus on this visible part of the iceberg and miss the essential. I think that the submerged part of the iceberg is the prerequisit of a perfect execution delivering value to the business ultimately.
As an example, in production, a golden rule is to secure a capacity margin to have a sustainable industrial set-up. For employees, we could imagine the same approach and allocate some time to explore what is making sense to them for their professional tasks or, simply following their intuition. I am deeply convinced that promoting refreshing ways of thinking, openess to disruptive ideas, simply doing what is most meaningfull are also part of value creation activities. Last but not least, it is becoming even more important to engage this path to attract young talents guided by the agility, fluidity, transparency, transversality...
Allocating time to promote value creation & what is making most sense to employees is perhaps not THE solution but it should initiate the change we deserve. What do you think ?
Let's explore beyond
8 年Hi Sylvain! I like the topic, let me share my thoughts :-) First I'd say that value is relative. What has value for someone won't for someone else. This means that identifying clearly the targeted stakeholder is a prerequisite to the analysis of value creation. Now looking at value creation itself, i'll consider myself as a potential beneficiary. i'd say that an activity creates value for me if either: - It saves me time - It empowers me before a community - It enables me to do new activity - It allows me to access to new perimeter - It gives me ownership of a good. This seems to me to be a non-exhaustive list. i'll keep thinking about it and come back if new ideas pop-up :-) Have a great day, Romain

9 年Nailed Sylvain. Just to add, creating the envoriment where this is possible is creating the reference to judge if the top level of the company is just managing ressources or leading ressources. thanks for the reflection. Paco
