More than 158 million (72 percent) of Americans are at an increased risk for serious health related issues from COVID-19 because of their being overweight and other underlying health conditions. What this means for you is that if you are at a social gathering or other event with 10 friends, seven of you are at a higher risk of severe sickness, infection, ailments, or death from COVID-19.
Some of the underlying issues of being overweight include:

So, why does being overweight increase your risk of serious impact from COVID? Because the fat stored in your belly is pushing up on your diaphragm. This can cause a restriction to the airflow to your lungs. Restricting the airflow to your lungs causes a shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
One symptom of COVID is that it makes breathing more difficult. If you are already having difficulty breathing, COVID compounds the struggle to breathe. Further, overweight and obese individuals tend to have more blood clots, especially in the lungs.
What this means for you is your underlying health issues can be a major factor in the seriousness of COVID and potential death.
