In the opening scenes of the Netflix documentary, ABSTRACT: The Art of Design, Professor Neri Oxman of MIT says, "Today we can look at the world in the resolution almost of human consciousness. From the very, very small scale, the scale of particles, and subatomic particles to atoms, nucleotides in the genome, to cells, to the human mind, to the earth, to the solar system, to the visible universe, to maybe parallel universes."

While she is talking, the following images flash across the screen.

The sequence reminded me of a book I read years ago, The Open-Focus Brain by Les Fehmi, PhD and Jim Robbins. That book taught me to play around while meditating, shifting my perception of where I am:

  • In my chair
  • In my office
  • Ten feet above the ground
  • Two miles outside of the village
  • 6,800 feet above sea level
  • Spinning around on the surface of the Earth
  • Circling the Sun
  • Deep inside the Milky Way
  • On one of more planets than I could count in 100 lifetimes

The above images, and Neri's description, offer another way to play with meditation. Imagine yourself really, really small. Or incredibly large. Shift to a parallel universe, and back again.

Anything is possible, because (maybe, who knows?) your mind creates reality, not the other way around.

Have fun with this. Don't be analytical or overly serious. Just play with it.

By the way, Neri Oxman's episode is called Bio-Architecture. She calls for a shift from human-centric design to Nature-centric design, which invites the creation of design solutions at the service of Nature while advancing humanity.

What a spectacular idea.

This is holism : all elements within their system, whether psychological, physical, biological, social, political, are included in deeper and deeper structures therefore parts and wholes should be both appreciated. *Psychological : consciousness evolves the same way : identification with the higher level, differentiation and inclusion of parts of the lower level. Holism = ??matriochka doll.

What an interesting way to meditate. I had always thought that the idea of meditating was to try and stop all thoughts and just focus on breath or a mantra so creating a perception of being in another Universe is a new concept for me. I will give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration.
