you have no power over me
Taking the step to own your story will mean, in some way, coming out of hiding and starting to share your story and your gifts with others.
That takes vulnerability.
And when you do that, you are bound to be confronted with one emotion over and over: fear.
Fear is a curious thing. As humans, it plays a necessary role in our evolution. It helps keep us safe. “Stay with the pack, and away from danger,” is fear’s message.
But too much of this absolutely paralyzes.
Bringing out your best gifts to serve others will mean choosing courage over fear, and then doing that again and again and again.
As a kid, I was fascinated by the movie Labyrinth.
The 80’s. David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, and Muppets.?
It’s cool, creepy, and if you know it, you either love it or hate it.
David Bowie plays Jareth, the Goblin King. He kidnaps Sarah’s (played by a young Jennifer Connelly) baby brother, Toby, and places him at the middle of an elaborate maze that she has to figure out before time runs out.?
At the end of the film, Sarah has worked through the maze and is finally face-to-face with Jareth.?
He promises to give her the life of her dreams if only she will let him rule her. Weird, sure.
The breakthrough comes for Sarah when she realizes that Jareth has no real power.?
His claim on her and her brother’s life has been an illusion the entire time. He has been using fear to keep her in bondage.
Sarah looks Jareth right in the eye and says with confidence: “You have no power over me.”
As the clock chimes, her voice echoes, “You have no power over me... over me... over me...” and the scene shifts.?
Sarah finds herself back at home with Toby and Jareth is gone. His only power was fear and illusion.
Fear is a bully. But it has no real power.
And if fear - fear of the unknown, fear of rejection, fear of being exposed as a fraud, fear of not being taken seriously - is keeping you from stepping into your story and sharing that with others, maybe it’s time to muster your courage, stiffen your spine, square your jaw, and look your fear right in the face and say: “you have no power over me.”

1 年This is well said, Jonathan. There are cutesy acronyms for fear that we've all heard and tried to imprint as top of mind. This effort is exhilarating at first but it fades. My observation is that these acronyms have the appearance of freedom but lack its actual power. Whereas, revelation, the truth that you know, makes us free indeed. As an anxious [frequent] flyer, fear grips me too. However, there is a clearing that happens as I buckle my safety belt that reminds me, I've been here before and I know how to do this.
