You're on a roll in the zone of genius, your meetings are back to back (ok zoom to zoom) and all of a sudden you remember you have forgotten to take a breath. Let’s look at why. For many of you, I’m guessing it is because of something pretty simple; you are so engrossed in what you're doing, stressed about what you need to do (next) or have packed your day so full you simple have no time to breathe. Yes, we frequently forget to really breathe. Thank goodness the body is smarter and can function itself when it comes to breathing.
So, hands up – are you guilty?
I’m Sooooooooooooooooooooooo Stressed.
How many times a day do you hear this?
It’s usually the reason we forget to breathe. So how do you fix this; enter meditation. I know – you are already thinking, I’m tooooooooooooooooooo busy and I’m tooooooooooooo stressed to even stop and think about this. Well please do stop, because you need to.
Meditation in its simplest form is a word used for multiple purposes to find a source of relaxation, and a simple breathing meditation can help you. Let's go a bit further to find out how you can calm the clutter in your mind, focus and gain clarity.
Five Benefits of Meditation (and a bonus)
- Lower your blood pressure
- Reduce anxiety
- Reduce the onset of depression
- Provide pain relief
- Improve your sleep
Bonus: Reduce perceived and prolonged stress
Physical and mental stressors can elevate levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which stimulates the release of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines. These chemicals further contribute to fatigue, issues with sleep, and general anxiety and depression. Meditation can help people find calmness and alleviate anxiety, helping activate a better connection to our autonomic nervous system, the system responsible for our heart rate, digestion, and the “fight or flight” response. By practicing meditation, you activate the neural structures involved in the control of this system, allowing the body to learn how to calm itself more efficiently.
Now it’s time to bring your meditation practice to life.
We could all use a bit more mindfulness and clarity at any time, and especially if you are experiencing prolonged stress. If you’ve never tried meditation but have always wanted to, let this be your trigger to finally say yes and try something new! You may be surprised by its impact on many aspects of your daily and weekly routine.
So, are you ready to accept support that will reduce and manage stress? One small step is starting your meditation practice? Simple, easy and one that you can do anywhere and at anytime, try this meditation I've recorded to help you.
