Are You Good With Patients?

Use These 2 Steps to Fix Your Marketing

Nicola, do you miss treating patients?

I get asked this a lot by fellow practitioners. The answer is no and yes.

No – I don’t miss the long days on my feet. Patients always used to say, "I bet your hands hurt at the end of the day." I’d always answer, "Thankfully, no, but my feet do." ??

What do I miss? The people. I had some lovely patients.

Like Debbie, who shared her delicious chicken soup recipe with me. I still use it to this day. When she heard I was moving to the Highlands, she showed up at my practice with containers for storing soup in the freezer. ??

And Paula, the HR executive who took six months off to "stop working so hard." She volunteered at a rhino orphanage in Africa for a month. She was one of the bravest people I’ve ever met. ????

And Stan, the fight choreographer, with his amazing stories about actors and dramas on set. His dedication to his health and fitness inspired me every time I met him. ???? (names changed before you wonder)

If you’re anything like me, and your practice was all about the people, that’s something to think about on your journey to reducing your hours.

If you’re great with people but not so hot with marketing, read on.

Something that never fails to amaze me is how practice owners address potential patients in their marketing. I’m seeing this more and more, likely influenced by my good friend ChatGPT. ??

For example, if you wouldn’t say to a patient in person: "Wave goodbye to pain in minutes" or "Unlock the secret to instant relief," …then it probably doesn’t belong in your marketing.

The secret to attracting more of your ideal patients?

  1. Your marketing needs to sound like you and reflect the way you work. The more it does this, the more it will attract your ideal patient. For example, I loved treating sports injuries. So – "Our goal is to get you back to hitting your health and fitness goals and performing at your best" – reflects that.
  2. Show your expertise by showing your ideal patient your understanding of their issue. For example: "Is a stubborn, niggling injury stopping you from hitting your health and fitness goals? Frustrated that you don’t feel like yourself when you can’t train properly?" This appeals to my ideal patient. I liked working with people who wanted to get better, who followed my advice to the letter, who were dying to get back to dance, football, yoga, etc.

Who’s your ideal patient? Is your website and marketing talking to them? ??
