When change happens, some will grow their influence while others will slow their influence.
In our book, Change Happens: Leading Yourself and Others through Change , Ria Story, Leadership Speaker, Author, Trainer shared the following 7 Ways to Grow Your Influence at Work when change happens.
7 Ways to Grow Your Influence at Work
1) Do more than expected.
Go above and beyond, whether it’s at work or at home.
At work, when someone asked me to research a Medicare regulation, I found the regulation online and sent it to them. But, I also took the time to read the regulation, tell them what it meant to them and how it impacted them, and then sent them a summary with a source link to the original document.
I also highlighted and summarized the important information for easy reference. Yes, it took more of my time, but I quickly became the “go-to” person for help with regulations.
2) Do it before it is required.
If you know something needs to be done – do it.
Don’t wait to be asked or “voluntold” because the first person to step up without being asked will be noticed as a leader long before the person who is asked to comply.
Look around for tasks that need to be done. Parents would love it if their kids did that. Your supervisor would love it if you did it. For that matter, your spouse would love it too. Vacuum or mow the lawn without being asked?
3) Be confident and humble.
There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance – it’s called humility.
Don’t be afraid to speak up when you know the answer to a question, but also don’t be afraid to admit if you don’t know something. Being humble enough to learn will take you a long way in any relationship.

4) Admit mistakes.
We all make mistakes. It’s simply a fact of life.
We will experience failure and have an opportunity to learn from it.
5) Volunteer to help others.
Those who have a heart for serving others in some way will build influence far beyond those who expect to be served.
It doesn’t always require a lot of effort – helping someone can be as little as opening a door for someone or as big as helping them move. It could be staying late to help a co-worker finish a project.
6) Take more responsibility.
When you take responsibility for making something happen, you own the situation.
Asking how you can do something allows you to think through a solution, instead of asking if you can do something. Little words – big attitude change.
7) Accept less credit and more blame.
Accept more of the blame when things go wrong and share more of the credit with others when things go right.
None of us accomplish much of anything alone. We all got to where we are today with the help of others at some point. Maybe, it was just a chance opportunity. Or, someone took a chance on you and gave you a job.
