What is an Auguste community?
Auguste communities are the new internal brand vanguards for dementia service provision within the Prestige Care Group
The communities can provide either nursing care or personal care, but each is governed by person-centered principles and triangle of care inclusive practices; Each element of the service is audited using both the care fit for VIPs person-centered care in dementia process (University of Worcester) and the adapted TOC self-audit tool (Carers Trust)
All Auguste Communities further adhere to the Prestige Group 12 core dementia design principles
As the group grows, and further matures, all Prestige Care Centres will feature an Auguste Community.
There will be dedicated service leads for the communities, in the case of Parkville Care Centre, this will be a qualified nurse, Jade Lavan. Community (Nurse) Manager.
She is supported in this venture by the location CQC registered manager, Wendy Rodway
Reclaiming the person from the disease
? Frau Auguste Deter was the very first person to receive a post-mortem dementia of the Alzheimers type ‘diagnosis’ from the then emerging Dr. Alois Alzheimer.
? His presentation, in 1906, of the pathology of her brain, is noted as the first time the disease trademark plaques, tangles and shrunken brain mass was publicly aired alongside her symptoms – the changes to the brain and the development of her symptoms were shown as cause and effect
? This disease has forever afterward carried his name,
? Dr. Alzheimer is forever remembered and revered, Auguste D, however, was assigned an anatomical bit part in medical textbooks and specialised studies
? At Prestige Care Group we wish to provide care that sees a PERSON before it sees a disease
? It seemed fitting to us, therefore, in fact, it seemed both necessary and honourable, to look anew at the history of dementia, and to rescue the person of Frau deter from the process of the disease
? Our dementia care communities are therefore developed in remembrance and in celebration of Auguste Deter as a human being, a woman, a wife, and a mother
? She was all these things long before she became a medical footnote and, in this dedication of our care communities to her, she reclaims this stature, even if only in the Prestige Care Group
? Communities too is a term we adopt to signify the coming together of people in a commune, (people living together, sharing common interests, often having common values and beliefs)
? We do not wish to view people simply because of a diagnosis or a probable diagnosis as being ‘ill’ and as somehow needing to be grouped together in a ‘ward’ or on a ‘unit’ and ‘set apart’
? Dementia has been medicalised long enough and by viewing our caring environments as communities we can begin to reframe the experience
? Our Auguste communities are places where people live together
? Our Auguste communities are designed to be a part of the community, not set apart from it
Serving the local community
Auguste Community at Parkville Care Centre is registered as a service able to provide nursing care and as such removes much of the need to place existing residents elsewhere into the community should they experience an exaggeration of symptoms associated with one of the dementia's or due to an exasperation of a physical need
The makeup of our nursing team at the community is that of a balance between Registered mental nursing (RMN) and registered general nursing (RGN) qualified staff
Our community manager (RMN) will be supported to keep this essential balance to the nurse qualified team
The care team itself will be made up of experienced carers, trained or undertaking specific training to understand and respond to dementia in a positive person-centered manner. There will be no senior carer roles this being a nurse-led community but there will be a number of care champions. These are carers who have taken extra qualifications or have demonstrated a particular ability for certain functions such as dignity, care planning or meaningful activities
The Oomph charity, a partner of Prestige Care Group, will provide training, development and continued focused input across the lifetime of the community and specific staff will be employed dedicated to providing meaningful, life history tailored and personalised activities and occupation
The kitchen will promote, and serve meals and supplements specifically adapted for older persons and older persons living with a dementia and co-morbid conditions
The Caroline Walker Trust guidelines along with those recommendations made under NICE for conditions such as diabetes’s will be in use at all times. There will also be snack points and finger food available throughout the day and night and 24-hour hot meal provision (the community has its own kitchen)
