Will you be a goal chaser or an achiever in 2020?

Will you be a goal chaser or an achiever in 2020?

Reading time: 4 min

Have you ever written the perfect list of goals and 3 weeks later you start feeling less and less inspired to do them? Two months later you just scratch that list and you go back to your old life. Have you ever wondered why does that keep happening? How to change it so you become an achiever?

We’ve just began a new year and a whole new decade; let’s talk about goals and how to achieve them effortlessly without feeling overwhelmed or stressed about it. Part of my job is to define corporate goals and motivate people to achieve them. I’ve learnt how to inspire people whose personal goals are very different from those of their employer. My findings can help us all achieve more in 2020 applying rules of human psychology and behaviour.

But first of all, WHY having goals and sharing them is essential?

Regardless of how we call them - goals, intentions, to do List, bucket list, wishes, dreams - all these are things we want. Every human naturally creates such “I want to …” list and often we have more than one thing in this list. For the sake of consistency I call them “goals” in this article.

By creating a goal we also create our future. Be creative when you create yours. Go beyond your own expectations. Write them as you have no limitations.

The biggest MISTAKE I’ve seen people do is to not share their goals. Do you really think you meet an old friend or someone you don’t know for no reason at that exact time?

Ask yourself also where the fear of sharing comes from. Once you get over this worry you may realise that you are either speaking with someone who can help you make it happen; someone who is on the same path so it will be quicker if you partner; or someone who has been already through the same experience and can give you the shortcuts.

So make a number 1 rule for yourself: start sharing your goals with other people

Here are the other 4 simple, yet powerful steps to follow when you want to achieve your goals:

2. Align your goal with your value system: Your goals should come from your heart as your heart stores your value system.

In business this means your goal has to be aligned with the mission, vision and core values of the company.

In personal life this means it's aligned with your own values. We all have value system, it could be built by your parents and grandparents, society, could be something you’ve created but we all have values and we run our life according them. Make sure your goals are coming from this value system. Otherwise you will start seeing how you sabotage yourself or procrastinate.

3. Pick the two goals that excite you most and do them first. Don’t choose the quickest ones but those who move you and excite you. This way you will see results and the process will make you eager to do the rest of the goals in the list. Don’t do more than two at a time - we simply can’t cope with too much.

Reason Nr1 people abandon their goals is because they don’t see results so they get less and less eager to achieve something as the brain says - ‘Aaa he / she is lying to herself again, why bother doing it’ - and it moves back to something familiar and well known.

4. Change your habits: When you choose long term goals ( several months or years ) don’t just concentrate on the goal itself but concentrate on changing your habits. The majority of long term goals are actually based on dropping bad habits and embedding new. So make a list of what habits you need to change, pick one habit and change it during the week. Next week continue with this one and ad a new habit, the 3rd week add 3rd routine and so on until you change all old habits which stopped you previously from achieving the goal you wanted. You may be surprised that the list of old bad patterns are actually 5 to 6 maximum

5. Trust yourself: The biggest stopper from achieving goals is our infobesity - a state when we are overloaded with too much information from everywhere. Someone says - ‘This works - try it!’ - so we start, few days later we read something else works better - we drop the first style and do the second one, several days later we read yet another thing and so on. Stop listening what others do and go within yourself. Listen to your own internal voice and your own heart. Your gut knows what’s best for you and what doesn’t work for you. Trust yourself!

Last but not least, I would like to remind you that money are not a goal. Money are a tool to get what you really want. Write down what you want to do with the money - that’s your real goal
