Are You Getting the Interview But Not the Job?

Are You Getting the Interview But Not the Job?

You're feeling good about your resume and your LinkedIn page.

I mean, why shouldn't you?

Your profile is attracting lots of attention and you don't seem to have any issues when it comes to landing the interview.

Congratulations. You're over the first hurdle.

So, you take the interview, meet the team and walk away confident that you're a solid match, and then...crickets.

What went wrong?

I spoke with a new client this afternoon who told me this has been her exact experience, and she is worried she is missing the mark when asked this one important question.

"Tell me about yourself".

This is NOT the time to recite your entire career history, detailing every job you've ever had.

It IS the time to make it very clear why you are the right match for the role for which you are interviewing.

It's essential to keep in mind that the interviewer wants to learn about your professional background and how it aligns with the position you're applying for.

Here are some tips on how to answer this question:

  1. Start with a brief introduction: Begin by introducing yourself and giving a brief overview of your education and professional background. Keep it concise and to the point.
  2. Highlight your relevant experience: Focus on the experiences that are most relevant to the position you're applying for. Talk about your achievements, responsibilities, and skills that make you the right candidate for the job.
  3. Emphasize your strengths: Discuss your strengths and how they will help you succeed in the position. Highlight specific examples of how you've used your strengths in your previous roles.
  4. Show your enthusiasm: Share your passion for the industry and the work that you do. Show your enthusiasm for the company and the opportunity to work there.
  5. Keep it professional: Remember, this is a professional interview, so avoid personal information that is not related to the job. Focus on your professional experiences, skills, and achievements.

Before any interview, go through the job description and pick out at least 4 bullet points that you can confidently speak to, and use those as talking points during the discussion. By doing this, you make it painstakingly obvious why you are the perfect fit for the job.

Remember, keep your answer concise and focused on your professional experiences and skills that make you a great fit for the job. Practice your response beforehand so that you can deliver it with confidence during the interview.
