You’ve put in the work. Decades of experience, hard-won lessons, deep expertise. You’ve built a reputation, delivered real impact, and created something meaningful. So why does the future feel so… uncertain?
I know this feeling well. After years of building businesses, launching projects, and coaching high-level experts, I hit a point where I started questioning what was next.
Not because I lacked ideas or drive, but because the landscape was shifting faster than ever. The strategies that worked before weren’t landing the same way.
The online world was noisier, clients’ expectations were evolving, and the old playbook didn’t feel as effective anymore.
This was one of the reasons I made the decision last year to join Oxford Innovation Space, to use my skills and experience in a different setting, to expand my knowledge and my network, and to give myself a break from needing to have all the answers, all of the time.
One of the observations I've had 10 months into the role is how much of my experience from projects I worked on decades ago is being used. My facilitation skills, my research skills, my leadership skills.
Very little from my 30 years of hard graft goes unused lol
I speak to experts, consultants, and solo entrepreneurs all the time who are facing a weird reality right now. They’re not beginners—they’re seasoned professionals with deep knowledge and credibility. But many of them are experiencing a disconnect between their years of expertise and how they show up in today’s changing world.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:
?? AI, automation, and tech shifts are changing the way people engage with expertise. Clients want results faster. They expect personalized solutions. They’re being bombarded with “experts” who popped up overnight, making it harder to cut through the noise.
?? Traditional business models feel more fragile. Relying solely on 1:1 consulting, old-school speaking gigs, or even outdated course models isn’t always enough. The experts I work with don’t want to build massive empires, but they do want sustainable, smart revenue that aligns with their values.
?? The biggest threat isn’t competition—it’s standing still. When you’ve built success one way, it’s tempting to double down on what worked before. But relevance isn’t automatic—it’s something we have to design with intention.
And here’s the kicker—we’re too close to our own work to see what needs to change.
As a natural innovator, I have never felt the pressure to stick to one thing. My career spans 30 years and curiosity has been the driving factor. I have worked across a number of sectors and niches, built a number of online and offline ventures, and supported tens of thousands of business's to adapt and innovate to meet the changing needs of the world.
YES the pace of change feels ridiculously fast at the moment...but I think that is an opportunity for those with REAL expertise to make a difference with their wisdom, perspective and energy...especially if their thinking is divergent from the norm.
If you’re nodding along to any of this, let’s talk. How are you navigating these shifts? What’s your biggest challenge in staying ahead?
PS...
Next week Thursday I am running a FREE Masterclass, my first of 2025 all about how to redesign and realign the way you talk about and apply your expertise.
