Are you a fly knocking the window glass?

Are you a fly knocking the window glass?

Success is important to you. You do everything you can to succeed in achieving your goals and reaching the next level.

The problem is that working hard and putting a lot of effort will not always bring you the desired result. Especially when you are stuck with a certain issue and can’t solve it…It needs to be solved, usually fast, but you have no idea how and where even to begin.

I work with high-profile people from different industries and countries and the common belief most of them have when it comes to solving a “tricky” issue is that you need to work hard to figure it out. There is no other way.

This is what happens…

What you can only think about is this problem. Nothing else matters at that moment. You can’t focus on anything else.

The logical thing to do is to spend as much time as possible trying to figure it out. You stay longer in the office. You come home but still think about that problem. You think and think and you come up with a plan. Not a great one. But a plan you will implement the following day. You don’t have any other options. You have to solve it ASAP.

The following day you start the implementation. A thought comes to your head that maybe it is not really what you need. Somehow you don’t have a peace of mind with that solution but what can you do? It is a logical solution; this is the ONLY way…

Failure. It did not work. Disappointment. Frustration. How is it possible?

Here is the truth: All of this is a clear sign that you have a so-called “Tunnel vision”.

The “Tunnel vision” is the vision you have about solving an issue or achieving a goal which is one-sided. You can see only ONE way, one tunnel within which you must move to reach the goal. No other possibilities.

It reminds me of a fly knocking the glass of the window trying to get in without success. It tries harder and harder. The light is there, inside the house. The fly really wants to get inside, especially given that it can see what is there. But it can’t. It loses its energy and may even die trying.

What this fly does not see is that there is an open door next to the window. The door is wide open, and it gives an access not only to one room but to the whole house.

The fly does not see the door because it has the tunnel vision. It truly believes it knows the only way to get in, via that window.

I am not trying to say you are a fly. I am saying that if you are trying hard to solve a problem, achieve a goal and no matter how hard you try you don’t progress, it is a clear sign that you are “knocking the wrong door”.

Your problem is that you don’t have time to even notice that something is wrong. You believe that the minute you stop, you would fail. You can’t afford slowing down to look around, as then you are losing time and a chance of solving an issue.

Solution

The tunnel vision will not get you far. Busyness kills creativity. You will NOT solve an issue until you stop, look around and find another door.

It is not about working long hours, thinking non-stop about a possible solution. You need to STOP. Close your laptop. Go and have fun with your friends or family, forget or do anything else not related to solving that problem.

Then the following morning you wake-up and somehow it all seems different, you are open-minded enough to see all the possibilities you have not seen before. The solution will come and this time it will be the right one.

Conclusion

Who said you have to work hard to succeed in solving a difficult problem?

True success comes when you are open enough to see outside of the “tunnel vision”, especially when what you are doing is not helping to progress.

You stay open and consider all the possibilities, other “doors”, especially when they are already opened. You know it is nearby, you just need to be open enough to see it.

Don’t knock the closed door. STOP. Take a step back. Assess. Be open to see other possibilities. Choose. Act. Succeed.

Do you have time to waste?
