Are you finding it more challenging to implement your design in development?

How to handle working with beginners and less experienced designers

Basically, most beginner designers and developers face this problem.Designers should learn basic development, and beginner developers should learn basic design. By doing this, both groups will have a similar understanding and mindset. When designers learn basic HTML and CSS, it won't restrict their creativity, but rather enhance their designs.

Include developers from the start of the design process.

Many developers may not fully understand or appreciate the importance of design. It's crucial to involve them early. When you begin designing, include developers in your discussions with your manager and project management team. This way, you can get their input and ensure they are engaged with the design process. It also helps in understanding what can be implemented.

Conduct a perfect handoff design meeting.

This is a very important step. Ensure you explain the designs properly and provide all source files during the meeting. If you introduce new components, explain to the developers why you used them and their importance. Existing components are useful for developers, but new ones will need to be implemented from scratch, so your explanation and assistance are crucial. As the lead designer, I review junior designers' tasks during the handoff review, checking all components and flows. We use the Design Lint plugin from Figma for this. Once the handoff review is complete, do not make any changes to the designs. Make sure everything is perfect before submission.

Implement designs part by part.

When handing off the design, split the work into phases. Decide with the developers what will be done in Phase 1, Phase 2, and so on. This helps in managing the workload and ensuring thorough, high-quality work with fewer issues.

During development of your designs:

Once developers start implementing, they may have many questions about your designs. Address their doubts promptly and keep the discussions in the main channel so managers and PMs can also see and make decisions if necessary. If a design or flow doesn't work, provide an immediate alternative to avoid delays.

Design review after implementation.

If you follow the steps mentioned, you should get a result that matches your design 70-90%. Any remaining issues, such as CSS and style tweaks, should be documented and linked. Explain any UI and UX issues and how they differ from the original design. Knowing CSS and HTML can be very useful for checking and communicating these issues directly.

What to do during testing:

During the testing phase, use the feature or product yourself to experience it like a real user. If you find issues or get new ideas, discuss them with your manager and PM team. Most changes should be minor, but if a significant change is needed, it may not be feasible.

These steps are what my team follows, and I'm sharing what I've learned from my experience. Following these steps will help you achieve the desired results from your design work.

Finally, don't restrict yourself by thinking some designs are not possible to develop. Think creatively and propose your designs to the team. If they can't be implemented now, suggest alternatives but mention they should be considered for future implementation.
