Are You Falling Into This Trap?

When people read this meme, they will often miss the obvious point, and perhaps this is a timely reminder.
Yes, it is true that in a very general and real sense… if you hire an amateur it can cost you enormously... keeping that in mind, we do it all the time and not always in the way you might think.
This becomes so obviously true when we are in the start-up phase of our business, and we don’t have the financial resource... either through savings, family or angel investors (which is most of us), so we end up doing pretty much everything on a shoestring budget.
Our normal default behaviour is to do it all ourselves…
We are the ones with the dream… the passion… and we are the ones that need to do this because there isn’t really anyone out there that can help us… or so we think or believe.
When we do finally hire assistance, we tend to find the best person, hopefully someone that our meagre resources can afford… and this often means that the people we hire usually aren’t sufficiently skilled or knowledgeable enough to give us the level of results we are actually looking for, and after spending a great deal of time and resources (both of which most of us can’t really afford to invest), we start to do things ourselves (and that's where the real lessons begin).
NOW… in our brief moment of great courage and even greater lack of wisdom, we enter the “Twilight Zone” of business development.
If you don't believe me… go to the bathroom and look in the mirror.
The person looking back you may very well be an expert or a professional in the one element of the business that is your particular strength… but that person who is reflected back at you, is certainly an amateur (in fact... worse than an amateur), in the many areas of the business than the people you hired in the first place.
Perhaps... you should start realising that hiring yourself to do things that you're not good at (Bookkeeping/Accounting, Web and Graphic Design, Marketing)... is not a very good idea… because 'THAT' particular amateur is going to cost you far more than you could potentially save.
That is not to say that you couldn’t become competent or even proficient in these critical areas, but the time, resources and the continuous distractions from the primary purpose of growing your business could cause the business to ultimately falter and fail simply because you chose to… “Let the inmates run the asylum!”

You may well ask… “But do I have a choice, are there alternatives that can help me grow my business?”
The short answer is yes…
It is called developing strategic relationships/partnerships and working with people whom you know, like and trust… people who have the skills you’re looking for and who may need your skills… so that you can both work together for mutual growth and success.
This is something that I have started doing with my new business and I have been very blessed with brilliant people who have amazing skills in my personal circle, and who are more than willing to assist me in my business as I am in helping them find new clients for their endeavours.
Nothing is more satisfying that creating a win-win-win proposition, where no one is disadvantaged and everyone prospers.
