You Will Fail As a Leader if You Don't Do This

I help Multifamily real estate investors go from employee to CEO and create a life of freedom, with meaningful contribution without torching their health, happiness or wrecking their relationships through the FP method.
Amazing Investors,
I wanted to jump on here quickly and share a few thoughts that have been on my mind. Whether you're a leader in your personal or professional life, you need to hear this. If you're not doing this, you will struggle in your relationships, business partnerships, collaborations, and your family life.
Understanding Leadership and Relationships
Leadership isn't confined to a title or a position. If you're taking care of anyone in your life, you're a leader. If you're serving and contributing to anyone's life, you're a leader. Even if you don't feel like you're at a high level, you're still leading yourself. Relationships are integral to human life. Without relationships, without our team, we cannot do anything, whether it's our home team in our personal life or our business team.
Owning Your Part in Relationships
A key issue many leaders face is the inability to own their problems and challenges. They struggle to apologize. I’ve been there myself, struggling to apologize to my wife, feeling smaller if I owned up to my mistakes. It's common sense, but many people don't do it. They don't own their part of the problem in a relationship.
Remember, whenever you're in a relationship, it's never a one-sided thing. It takes at least two people to move a relationship forward. Everyone has an impact and influence on each other. As a leader, you will make mistakes. It's a baseline assumption. When something goes wrong in a relationship, it’s never just one person's fault. Assume that you have a part in it, even if you don't see it yet. Ask yourself, "How am I making this worse? What is my part here? What can I do differently?"
"As leaders, many of us fail to own our challenges and apologize when necessary. This isn't just a minor issue – It can be the difference between thriving and failing." - Faisal Ensaun, CHPC
The Power of Apologizing and Seeking Feedback
Many people wait for the other person to apologize first. However, you need to own your part first before expecting someone else to do the same. This requires willpower, intention, and aligning with your values and what your life is about. Owning your part in relationships extends to everything—personal and professional. Whether you've had breakups, failed marriages, or bad business partnerships, owning your part is crucial.
I've only been married once and am still happily married despite the struggles. Relationships are a mirror showing you what you need to own and face in your life. People often see feedback as negative, but it’s essential for growth. Being proactive in seeking feedback helps you understand the effect you’re having on others.
Implementing Feedback for Growth
Seek feedback from those around you. Ask them what they think of you, how they feel around you, and what effect your actions have on them. One of my coaches had me send a survey to my family, colleagues, and partners asking for their honest feedback. Reading their responses was tough, but it gave me invaluable insights.
Be open to feedback, even if it's harsh. Understand why someone feels a certain way about you. This curiosity will help you grow as a leader. It's challenging, but it’s worth it. The best leaders strive to understand their impact and improve continuously.
Start by owning your part in any relationship. Apologize and take responsibility. Be proactive in seeking feedback to understand how you affect others. This will make you a better leader and improve your relationships.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you feel it's important to own your responsibility in relationships and actively seek feedback? Share your approach below. We can all learn from each other. If you found this helpful, please share it with someone who might benefit from it—an investor, entrepreneur, friend, colleague, or business partner. This might save them a lot of time, hurt, and struggle.
Until our next conversation, have an incredible day.
Take care, Faisal Ensaun,CHPC
