You Are Not For Everyone
"You need to tone down your energy. You're...a lot."?
This is what someone said to me earlier this week. It caught me off guard because...well...rude.?
Has something similar ever happened to you? Maybe you were told you were too loud, too quiet, too confident, too disruptive, too bossy, too carefree, or too optimistic. How did you respond? Did you believe them??
There was a time in my life when comments like this would make me question how I show up in the world. But not anymore.?
Do I have lots of energy? Yep. Always have. It's kind of my thing. But, it's not for everyone. And not only is that just fine, but it's also great. The qualities someone dislikes about you are probably the same ones that?attract the right people into your life. It's the qualities that come so naturally that you don't even realize how unique they?are...your superpowers. They are the?special gifts that make you...you.?
Speak your mind. Share your thoughts. Laugh out loud. Compliment a stranger. Dance to the music playing from your headphones as you stroll down the sidewalk. Create for the fun of it. Be the friend you wish you had. Love with all your heart.?
Embrace who you are and never give anyone the power to dim your bright light.
My new book?Do What You Love?officially launches on June 1st! Please join my?Book Launch Team ?if you'd like to help me promote it. Thank you so much for your support in this meaningful project.

1 年I love the topic of “diminishers.” Phrases thrown at me include, “You’re intense,” and “This is overkill.” Well, high school softball/baseball teams have 2-3 coaches. That’s respectable. Major League teams have a dozen coaches. It’s intense. But which league do you want to play in? Some employees behind the bar are called bartenders – also respectable. But the hospitality industry created a profession called a mixologist. It’s intense. Which beverage menu do you want? Sommelier. Porsche. Taj Mahal. Meryl Streep. Yo-Yo Ma. Imbibing in world-class skill and passion is delightful and a kind of richness, wealth, and generosity. Being cheap with one’s energy risks insulting others. The responses that come to mind, but are unspoken, include, “Instead of proactive, you prefer reactive?” “Are less passionate, less ambitious people the best fit here?” “This work isn’t worth the energy, huh.” I believe the best sustainable relationships find balance, in particular, a balance of passion. I encourage thoughtfully and carefully stepping away from diminishers. As you say Kate, passion and intensity isn’t for everyone. So, yes, I believed them. To some baseball isn’t an art. It’s just a ball and a stick. But diminishers don’t fill stadiums.

1 年It has hurt me career wise throughout my life!! In retrospect I should have limited myself and my exuberance as it caused me professional jealousy for nearly 50 years!! Now, I’m a literal zombie of my past self. Probably a more peaceful life conclusion. Thanks for ur opportunity to vent!
