Are you an Emotional Seller?

Are you an Emotional Seller?

One day Buddha was walking through a village

A very angry and rude young man came up and began insulting him. You have no right teaching others," he shouted. You are as stupid as everyone else. You are nothing but fake. Buddha was not upset by these insults. Instead, he asked the young man.

Tell me, if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong? It would belong to me, because I bought the gift. The Buddha smiled and said, that is correct. And it is the same with your anger. If you become angry with me and I do not get insulted, then the anger falls back to you. If you want to stop hurting yourself, you must get rid of your anger and become loving instead.

When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you love others, everyone is happy.

Have you encountered a customer who was like young man, I am sure we all have. I was talking a dear friend yesterday; he is a real estate consultant and was talking about a prospect who wanted to buy two flats for 15 crores and kept harping that he will not pay the full brokerage – instead pay only half the percentage requested. My friend was adamant that he will only work on the terms shared. The prospect kept on pestering him in spite of several emails and WhatsApp messages. He was just pushy and trying to corner them and say it’s a big deal you should do it as per my terms! I am sure at many instance my friend lost his patience and wanted to push back and be extremely unprofessional and wanting to show him his spot! (yes I did transliteration here- uski aukat dikha du) but the gentleman he is, he kept politely refusing and guess what- the prospect turned to client and agreed to work with him on his terms.

Negotiations are part of the sales process, but often you will meet this one odd cookie who will keep pushing and that is the test of your EQ.

While sales is a passionate process and it cannot be done mechanically, you have to show your emotions and work on the emotions of your clients, the winner is one who doesn’t step the line and become mature and use the positivity wisely.

What we learn from the Buddha story is the importance of controlling one’s emotions. In marketing, it is crucial to maintain professionalism and not react emotionally to criticism or competition. This helps build a brand's reputation for being reliable and respectful.
