Are you an effective coach? 5 qualities all great coaches have!
I've been fascinated with coaching for years.?
I've employed it in a leadership and managerial environment, group and one-on-one settings, I've used it when leading friends through tough times or career changes and I've adopted it for moments of parenting and marital communication.
Coaching.?
I think it is an unbelievably effective form of communication, leadership, self-leadership and care.
But, what makes a good coach??
I believe a good coach.
Watches Closely:
A good coach watches subtle shifts in body language, posture, facial expression, tone of voice, eye gaze. They're aware of the non-verbal expressions of emotion and what the says about a person.

Listens Carefully:
A good coach simultaneously listens to both the verbal and non-verbal. They are aware of the body and whether it conveys an aligned message or out of alignment message. A good coach is an active listener.
Validates Repeatedly:
Validation creates safety. Safety creates the ability to transform lives. A good coach watches the non verbal, actively listens to the verbal and validates the subjects feelings by way of verbal affirmations and using their own non-verbal communication to mirror and reflect the required emotion (e.g. head nodding, head bowing in a sign of empathy, palms open, eye contact).
Questions Kindly:
A great coach uses the skill of active listening and mirroring to shape and articulate questions back to the subject that allows them to feel heard, understood and safe. Questions should always seek to strengthen the subject not leave them feeling exposed.
Re-builds Purposefully:
The risk is that coaching is only destructive without this element. Coaching should always be about building people up, not about leaving them feeling exposed. A great coach will always lead a subject to a place of growth either by way of self awareness, self-reflection, self-development or encouragement. A great coach will always re-build someone bigger, badder and stronger than they were before.
The power of a great coach is undeniable. Similarly, it is not the only way to be an effective leader. It is just one of the many styles and forms of leadership.
I am a passionate coach and believer that my job as a leader is not to be better than the people I lead but it's to get the best out of the people I lead. if I can achieve that in life then I will have lived a purposeful and fulfilled life.
