If you don't want Trump re-elected, don't kick Sarah Sanders out of your restaurant
We may not all agree about politics, but we should respect each other’s opinions. Some people, of course, find the behaviour of the Trump administration to be beyond simple differences of perspective.
But there’s no reason that White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, or any other political figure in the United States, should be refused service at, or kicked out of, a restaurant. The owners of the restaurant in Virginia may not agree with the president Sanders represents, or even the way she represents him. And technically, they may have the right to refuse service to anyone they choose. But in a free society, that’s not the way we should behave.
Some of the people attacking Trump for being divisive are now as much of the problem as he is. They are contributing to the notion that Trump and his team are being treated unfairly, and they are emboldening his supporters. If we want a society in which people should not be barred from receiving service because of their race, gender or sexual orientation, we shouldn’t ban them for their politics. And anyone who wants a world without Trump in the White House should rethink these tactics that are only making it more likely that he gets re-elected.

6 年There is some true to this. I hope people start acting kind even if they don't agree.?

6 年If this administration simply bent the truth or spun things differently, I would agree, however, they outright and blatantly lie. Trumps actual “base” is minuscule and they hardly have the numbers to re-elect him on their own.

6 年I respectfully disagree with Mark. Here are some of my reasons why. Recently, Seth Rogan was at a fund raiser for alzeimers and Paul Ryan asked him if he'd pose for a picture with Paul and his family. Seth said no, and he has been attacked and bullied for it ever since. The Parkland School students who have been advocating to stop the violence in schools have been bullied and attacked by Trump supporters. Michelle Wolf was attacked and bullied for doing what comedians have done for years at the White House Press dinner -roast the politicians and administrators. Trump has bullied NFL and NBA players for peacefully and civilly protesting. Trudeau says Canada will not be pushed around and look where that got us. Civil and peaceful protest gets you no where with Trump and his supporters. Civil protest is like red meat to Trump and his suporters. The time for Civility has long passed. Peacefully protest yes, but Civility only works if it is reciprocal.

6 年There is a truth to this. It starts with the fact that politics these days is upside down, and the more the media, others and the "elites", make a spectacle of him, the more Trump's base get;s fired up. You can't apply any laws of normalcy or rationality to it. I first encountered this during the tenure of Rob Ford as Mayor of Toronto. Even after the video of Ford smoking crack cocaine was proven. Even after the Mayor admitted to buying and smocking crack cocaine. I recall a women being interviewed at one of the Ford Fest events, and being asked what she thought of Rob Ford now that we know he smokes crack cocaine and is frequently drunk - possibly even while working and driving. She looked right in the camera and said, "Rob's a great guy and the best Mayor that Toronto has ever had"!!

6 年I’m late to this, I thought Red Hen was a codename for a campaign benefactor for Trump? When he comes to the U.K. let’s hope everyone here shows their appreciation of his efforts to build a more peaceful, sustainable and harmonious world and says with the greatest respect we aren’t against foreign visitors, but please piss off home you enormous bell-end.
