You don't see many of these - a CD - these days - or do you?
Will Adele create a retro trend that reverses the streaming of music?
Today I trekked to Tesco to find Adele's new album "25". It's the first CD I have bought in a couple of years.
And Tesco had to go and find one in the storeroom because the shelf where it should be was empty - obviously it was popular, or is it just that retailers (like Tesco) are so unused to CDs flying off the shelves that they simply weren't monitoring the shelf stock and had forgotten to replenish?
Back catalogue here to stay to stream?
It isn't just her new album that she has refrained from making available digitally for streaming. Recently I fired up my Qobuz streaming music App to search for Skyfall - so as to compare Adele's bond theme with that of Sam Smith's for Spectre - but I found that that was once available to stream was no longer!
This seems like a retro step - but not one that is desirable, like vinyl... which my brother is rediscovering now that he has a new vinyl deck.
Backward?
No this feels like a backward step, because I paid up front for a Qobuz streaming subscription on the basis that I can stream any new album of merit and also stream most of the back catalogue of artist I like - all in glorious CD quality (16bit/44.1kHz) and some in HD Audio (24bit/192kHz) - so I was really disappointed by the effective removal of music that I had previously been able to stream without issue.
But perhaps this drives (and I did drive to Tesco) people to reengage with CDs?
Perhaps Adele has restarted something old - sticking a plastic disc in your car's audio entertainment slot?
Probably not - I will simply rip the CD in 16bit/44.1kHz Apple Lossless (or FLAC) and stick the files on my NAS for playback via my Sonos and my iPhone then stored the CD in a big container along with the hundreds of other CDs - so actually it just frustrates and delays the enjoyment.
And for Skyfall - yes I have to get another disc out - the blu-ray disc of the film and play the title sequence to hear Adele belt out the theme tune - ho hum!
