Self-belief.
It’s more important than ANYTHING. You can have qualifications coming out of your ears, but it means absolutely NOTHING if deep down, you don’t believe in yourself.
Once your self-belief matches your career aspirations, the sky is the limit....and beyond. Interviews feel easy. You know exactly how to sell yourself on job applications. You ask for exactly what you deserve. You get paid your worth. You ooze a magnetic energy that attracts all the best opportunities your way.
It’s like magic!
This was me too…I spent most of my corporate career stuck in jobs where I felt unfulfilled, over-worked, under-paid and undervalued. I worked really hard and ‘hoped’ I would get noticed and given the promotions I deserved. I didn’t.
I blamed it on useless Bosses or ruthless colleagues that were ‘out to get me’. I blamed it on not having a degree. I felt like a massive loser. I blamed everything apart from my self-doubt.
You can hang around waiting to feel more confident or get noticed and waste years and years of your life. Or you can take charge of the reins and demand the respect, reward and recognition you deserve TODAY.
Here’s some of the changes I’ve made that have transformed me from stuck, stressed and unfulfilled to the thriving, empowered baddass I am today.
I changed my inner dialogue
I didn’t have a clue I was doing this because it was so habitual, but that mean, critical voice in my head was destroying my confidence. I was so horrible to myself. No wonder I had no faith in my brilliance. These are called automatic, negative thoughts and often we just let them rule the roost. Mine sounded like a nasty bully, I called myself stupid, an idiot, a dick all day long.
They may seem like innocent thoughts or words, but all the time you are beating yourself up and calling yourself names, you are damaging your self-belief. How can you trust and have faith in someone that you think is an idiot? Your words are powerful, they create your reality. If you’re default is negative and critical, how are you ever going to sell yourself in a job interview? People pick up on that energy!
I focus hard on my positive qualities
Because I already had a very negative view of myself, I only ever saw my perceived mistakes, failings or flaws. My thoughts were heavily focussed on how stupid I was or what I loser I was, I didn’t even notice my positive attributes – it was like they didn’t exist. And even if someone complimented me, I didn’t believe them and dismissed it. How on Earth was I ever going to get promoted when I was completely blind to everything that made me the best candidate for promotion?
I had to make a conscious effort to seek out my positive qualities instead. I started to spot all the tiny, little things that made me awesome. It wasn’t easy to begin with because it felt weird and unnatural, but with practise I completely re-programmed my thoughts.
This is where lots of people slip up, you try to make big changes too fast using affirmations like, “I am wonderful just as I am”. You can’t go from thinking you’re a loser to thinking you’re wonderful in one step. You have to gently change those thoughts over time by making small, incremental changes to your thoughts.
I changed the way I looked at mistakes or failures
If you had asked me if I was a perfectionist, I would have laughed in your face BUT I was a perfectionist. I had an underlying belief that if I wasn’t the best, then I wasn’t good enough. This wreaked havoc with my career because what I was really telling myself was that I was never allowed to make mistakes or get anything wrong.
Everything for me was about avoiding mistakes, it was exhausting. I would spend hours researching answers to questions or checking my work to make sure nobody could say anything negative about it. I spent so long making sure everything was meticulously perfect that I would end up missing deadlines or not hitting my targets.
It was impossible for me to match up to the unrealistic standards I set myself because NOBODY is perfect. I would inevitably make a mistake or receive some criticism and then I would beat myself up for not being good enough.
So I learnt to view mistakes as an opportunity to learn a lesson and improve myself instead of a reason to be hard on myself. If you don’t ever make mistakes, you don’t ever improve.

I started to enjoy the journey
This was the hardest thing for me to embrace because I’m just so impatient by nature, I’m in a rush to get everywhere! The thing is, all the time I’m striving to reach my next goal, I’m giving myself the message that I’m not good enough until I reach my destination. And I’m never going to reach my destination if I don’t ever feel good enough.
I was stuck.
I thought, if I just get a better job, then I will be good enough. But it doesn’t work like that, you have to feel good enough first, then you will get the better job. So, I started to enjoy the journey. I celebrated all the tiny, little wins along the way. I celebrated how hard I tried and the effort I was putting in rather than solely celebrating achievements. I started living in the moment and getting excited about today rather than always having my head in the future, waiting around to magically feel confident without doing anything to make myself confident.
What I’ve realised, I was never going to feel happy because it was the inside that needed healing. I needed to learn to love myself, accept myself, trust myself and that is where my happiness will come from. When I’m 100% comfortable in my own skin, the outside world will follow.
