You Don't Need an Executive Coach

You Don't Need an Executive Coach

You heard that right!

However, many high-performing leaders CHOOSE to work with coaches because they know that having an independent, confidential, and trusted person in their corner can help them excel.

Executive coaching is a thought-provoking and action-oriented process that inspires you to maximize your personal and professional potential, especially in today's uncertain and complex environment.?

As a Coach, I believe and know that every client is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. ?There's nothing "wrong" and nothing to be "fixed." My role is to help you:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what you want to achieve
  • Encourage your self-discovery
  • Elicit solutions and strategies generated by you
  • Hold you accountable for the results you want

That seems odd, and you would think that high-achieving leaders could do this by themselves.?

Some can.?Many cannot.?

The saying goes: "you don't know what you don't know." And many of the things that hold you back from achieving your full potential is in your blind spot.?Especially how you sabotage yourself and your team – without even being aware of it.

The coaching process helps you dramatically improve your work-life integration while improving your skills and unlocking your potential.?In a coaching alliance, I will:

  • Provide objective assessments and observations that foster your self-awareness and that of others
  • Listen closely to understand your circumstances fully
  • Act as a sounding board to explore possibilities and support your planning and decision making
  • Champion you and your potential
  • Encourage you to stretch into your strengths and aspirations
  • Foster shifts in thinking that reveal fresh perspectives
  • Reveal blind spots to illuminate new opportunities and support the creation of alternative scenarios

You might ask, how is coaching distinct from other personal or organizational development modes like Consulting, Mentoring, and Training?

Consulting: Individuals or organizations retain consultants for their expertise. ?While consulting approaches vary widely, the assumption is the consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. ?With coaching, the assumption is that individuals or teams can generate solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.?

Mentoring: A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and knowledge based on their own experience. ?Mentoring may also include advising, counseling, and coaching. ?The coaching process does not include advising or counseling and focuses on the individual setting and reaching their own objectives.

Training: Training programs are based on objectives set out by the trainer or instructor. ?Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are set by the individual being coached, with guidance provided by the coach. ?Training also assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum, and coaching is nonlinear without a set curriculum.

What are some reasons you might WANT to work with me??

  • Something urgent, compelling or exciting is at stake (a challenge, stretch goal, or opportunity)
  • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, or confidence
  • Change is afoot in your workplace or life
  • A desire to accelerate results
  • Communications breakdowns at work or home
  • A lack of clarity with choices to be made
  • Success has started to become problematic
  • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences
  • Core strengths need to be identified, along with how best to leverage them
  • You're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or burned-out

What Does it Take for a Coaching Alliance to be Successful?

Working with me requires both a personal commitment of time and energy as well as a financial commitment. ?To be successful, I will ask certain things of you, including:

  • Observing your behaviors and communications with others
  • Listening to your intuition, assumptions, and judgments
  • Challenging your existing attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors and developing new ones that serve your goals in a better way
  • Leveraging your personal strengths and overcoming your limitations to develop a winning style
  • Taking decisive actions, despite your discomfort and personal insecurities, to reach for extraordinary results
  • Showing compassion for yourself and others while learning new behaviors and experiencing setbacks
  • Committing to not taking yourself so seriously and using humor to lighten and brighten any situation
  • Summoning the courage to reach for more than before while engaging in continual self-examination

How do you ensure compatibility with me??Here are a few other tips:

  • Interview me to determine "what feels right" in terms of chemistry. ?I’m accustomed to being interviewed, and an introductory conversation of this type is free of charge
  • Look for stylistic similarities and differences between me and you and how these might support your growth as an individual
  • Share your goals for the coaching alliance.?Be clear on what you want to get out of the coaching.
  • As the coaching alliance unfolds, talk with me about ?what's working (or not)

DON’T private message me if you feel you NEED to work with a coach.

DO private message me if you feel you WANT to work with a coach.

Excellent post, David. Thank you! As a beneficiary of multiple coaches throughout my life, I can attest to the many benefits you list, and to the importance of compatibility. A coaching relationship is a personal relationship and so compatibility between the two persons is paramount to success. One of my most helpful coaches once said "It's hard to see the [whole] picture when you're in the picture." So true...
