You Don't Lie - But I Still Don't Trust You

You Don't Lie - But I Still Don't Trust You

Truth-telling isn’t part of my trust model, and there are very good reasons why.

When we talk about truth, what do we really mean? Truth can take the form of facts, opinions, or beliefs. Facts are verifiable—based on evidence we can research and confirm. For example, as of 2013, there have been 57 female astronauts compared to 477 male astronauts. This is a fact that can be checked.

Where the issue arises is when judgments are made based on facts. For example, one might say, women are discriminated against in the astronaut program. While this could be true it is still an opinion, not a verifiable fact.

Beliefs complicate things further. Unlike opinions, beliefs are deeply tied to values, faith, or morality and are often immune to logical argument. Continuing with the astronaut example, someone might believe that women shouldn’t be allowed in space because they belong at home caring for the family. Beliefs, emotional at their core, shape how people perceive truth but are not the same as truth.

Why does this matter for trust? Because trust often breaks down when we confuse these categories. If you want to be trustworthy, you must ask yourself: Am I sharing a fact, an opinion, or a belief when I’m ‘telling my truth’?

A fact, an opinion, or a belief? Asking yourself this could slow down a conversation, but it could also stop emotions from escalating or ill feelings from arising. I'm going to keep this question in my mind, especially for controversial discussions. Thanks Lea!

Lea Brovedani Truth telling is simply one of several behaviors that serve to help or hinder trust building. None of them taken alone will get you across the #trust finish line.
