You don’t have to have a ton of connections to land your offers - you can do this instead

I landed a gateway job offer into the legal field without even being active on LinkedIn or having many quality connections.?

I was hired multiple times before even having any connections.?

?

One big leap was when I transitioned from being a cashier at the grocery store to wanting to become a Paralegal at a Law firm with no education or anything.

?

My dad had said that I could get through to anyone with the right words and that getting real experience was more important than schooling.

?

And so I just believed these things were true (he gave me some great beliefs but also some terrible ones, a story for another day)...

?

I wrote a letter to the owner of this law firm I had my eye on.?

?

I researched the law firm and all the lawyers who worked there.?

?

I wrote a carefully worded letter to the owner of a law firm and it got through!

And this has happened more than once!This is why I believe so hard in CREATING our own opportunities.?

Back to how I transitioned.?

?

In 2016 I dropped off this letter that changed what I believed for my whole life.

?

I dropped off a letter carefully thought out, offering to help them with administrative work.

I had no experience in offices at all, and I didn’t have any education or certifications either.?

?

I dreamed at the time of working in a law firm, and I chose this one because their location happened to be right down the road from where my Dad had his furniture store and I loved the way it looked on the outside and I decided I just wanted to work there.

?

I researched it and went on their website and started looking into what they did and how they did it.?

?

And the Office Manager called me saying yes to an interview! ?

And then she said yes to what I was offering. ?

And I worked there for 3 years.?

?

That one “Active reach-out” I made, offering to help them with admin work, opened many doors to other things.

I moved on from there to get headhunted to become a Paralegal at another prestigious law firm in my town. And I got the experience and training for free, (Paid for by them).

?

It allowed me to see what this career was like and not have to invest so much in certifications before I even knew if I would like it.

?

Because it turns out I didn’t.?

?

So I ended up leaving less than a year later to pursue my next adventure of personal training. (This is a nod to those of you who feel like half your life you’re fumbling around figuring it out, this was my experience).

I fumbled around SOOO much moving from one thing to another so many times.

Only now at 40 do I feel like I’m kinda getting the hang of things and what I'm actually supposed to be doing here on the planet. ?? ?

This is the power of a Active reach-out done with heart.?

?

And I mean active reach outs to well... strangers. Get a very bad reputation for GOOD REASON.?

?

Most active reach-outs are not well done.?

?

As my friend says it’s like the guy at the bar asking anything out that moves at the end of the night. He doesn’t care who you are, or what you look like, he just has 1 thing on his mind. You can smell one of those messages a mile away.

?

But THOUGHTFUL, well thought out ones, to the right organizations and people (people you really feel connected to and want to work with) with aligned, and good-hearted intentions and words to match.

These can change the entire trajectory of your career and open many doors beyond.?

?

A good active reach-out is like a secret door that no one knows about to a reality no one was thinking about existing, because no one was really loudly advertising it all over LinkedIn, because most people have received bad ones and associate them with transactional networking.

BUT Because I did it differently I know that the power is there to create opportunities through this method.

?
