You don’t have to be stuck with a snooze-worthy internship.

If you’re a high achiever, never settle for an internship without meaningful experiences. Setting yourself up for success in the internship search process can be daunting, but Lower’s here to walk you through the process this summer.

Step 1: Know your destination before hitting the road.

Imagine yourself in your dream role. Are you working in an office or at home? Are you the Excel wizard or the mastermind behind the company’s next marketing campaign? Determine your path before you sift through job postings.

Challenge your comfort-oriented brain with a new challenge.

Your internship can either take up space on your resume, or it can broaden your skill set. Don’t limit yourself to your current skills. Instead, challenge yourself while still being honest with your recruiter about your present knowledge and skill set.?

Perfect your resume.

Recruiters love to hire interns who demonstrate leadership, high achievement, expertise, and character. AJ Schwarzkopf, VP of Talent Acquisition with a decade of experience, provides insight into what sticks out to her on resumes:

  • Leadership within athletics, student government associations, Greek life, campus employment, etc.
  • Academic achievement awards and GPA
  • Expertise through past internships, passion projects, college concentrations, and electives
  • Character development through volunteer experience and soft skills

Prepare, prepare, prepare.

Research the company and your role by checking out the following:

  • Their company website — specifically sections about their mission, team dynamics, and products and services
  • Their official social media pages (and their employee pages if they have any)
  • Previous interns, senior leadership, and anyone else relevant to the role on LinkedIn
  • News stories about the company
