You Don't Have to Be A Social Media Expert

"I don’t care about the tools. I care about the interactions. I care about business making. I care about helping professionals communicate and connect. It’s a very different passion. I don’t care which typewriter Hemingway used. I care that he made us feel something. I care about how that 'something' translates into business." - Chris Brogan

It's been said that social media platforms are essentially tools. Since social media is a tool, then your job, as a thought leader with a mission-driven business, is to wield it to build your house of purpose. What's refreshing about building a house of purpose is there are many tools and materials you can use to do so, and better still, it's not a job you have to do alone. In fact, you'll build more efficiently with the right people to help you out

The catch to this is that the right people won't show up if they don't know you're building or why they should care. Let's say you've even made great progress by your lonesome, but you're dead tired now, and could use some help.

What do you think your people will appreciate more? A quick tour of your mansion, or the back story about how it started as a shack-withstanding the darkest storm-later to be restored using paints that contained no harmful pesticides, while you offer everyone some fresh squeezed lemonade from a local organic produce stand?

The best source material is the person wielding the tool, not the tool itself. We're drawn to people who go to work, day in and day out, using tools they weren't sure how to use, but showing up each day anyway giving it their all, perfecting their techniques and inspiring us to do the same. Most go-getters could care less about how shiny the tools are or how said tools are top of the line. We care about how what is being built makes us feel. And we love experiencing this feeling together.

You don't need to be a social media expert to create a dream business that shares these experiences and feelings.

Everything you need is already within you. Your back story, your passion, and your inspiration. The tools are only there to aid you in the process of creating your house of purpose. They simply help you share your ongoing experiences while you build.

Lynette, I completely agree! What's even worse is when the new boss thinks the new hire can be the social media expert--just because he or she is young. https://dennisfischman.com/congratulations-youre-our-new-social-media-expert/
