You Don't Get What You Don't Ask For

"Closed mouths don't get fed" – an age-old wisdom that rings especially true in today's professional landscape.

Opportunities rarely fall into our laps. Yet, many of us still wait silently, hoping someone will notice our hard work, read our minds, and offer exactly what we're looking for. Silence is the language of missed opportunities.

Let's be real – that's not how success works.

The Art of Asking

Here's something we often forget: people can't read minds. Your manager doesn't know you're interested in leading that new project. Your dream company doesn't know you'd be the perfect fit for their team. That potential mentor doesn't know you'd value their guidance.

Think about it – how many times have you caught yourself saying "I wish..." or "If only..."? Those unspoken expectations and desires are just daydreams until you voice them. They're like unopened gifts – full of potential but useless until you take action.

The Power of 'No'

"But what if they say no?"

Something to consider: a 'no' today is better than a lifetime of 'what if.' At least with a 'no,' you have clarity. You can pivot, adjust your approach, or move on to other opportunities. Without asking, you're stuck in limbo, carrying the weight of unexplored possibilities.

The Negotiation Dance

Here's where it gets interesting – asking isn't just about getting exactly what you want. It's about opening doors you didn't even know existed. Maybe you won't get exactly what you asked for, but you might get something even better.

Remember this: Most requests aren't a simple yes/no equation. There's usually room for negotiation, alternative solutions, or future possibilities. That promotion you're eyeing might not be available now, but your initiative could put you first in line when it is.

Asking Is Hard

There's no denying it – asking is hard. It's like standing at the edge of a diving board; the longer you wait, the more daunting it seems. But you know what's harder? Sitting with regret, wondering what could have been if you'd just found the courage to speak up.

Courage + Opportunity = Possibility

I've never met a successful professional who got where they are by keeping quiet about their ambitions. Most career milestones – whether it's a raise, a promotion, a new opportunity, or a meaningful connection – started with someone being brave enough to ask.

What You Can Do

Here's my question to you: What have you been hoping for but haven't asked for? What opportunities are you letting slip by because you're waiting for the "perfect moment" or for someone to notice?

Your career isn't a mind-reading game – it's a series of conversations waiting to happen. Take that first step. Draft that email. Schedule that meeting. Make that call. The worst that can happen is hearing 'no.' But the best? That's limited only by what you dare to ask for.

Your career is too important to leave to chance. Your dreams are too valuable to remain unspoken. Your potential is too great to stay hidden.

At the end of the day, you really can't get what you don't ask for.

What will you ask for today?

The title resonates with me. I’ve always said this and you might not get what you do ask for so you might as well just ask.

Don’t deny the other side their right to say yes. That’s what you’re doing when you assume it’s a no without even asking.

Excellent points and spot on, Marcy. Thank you from this career negotiator - it’s one of the hardest lessons for my clients to learn.
