IF YOU DON’T GET A JOB YOU LIKE, Better start like the job you have,
This post is not meant for those who fit in their jobs 100%
Very few people get jobs they like. The efforts we put in, during the early years, to chase the job we like has a time limit. Unfortunately, it coincides with the stage of life, where we try to settle down in life too. We all settle down in life without knowing whether our decision of choosing the spouse is right or not. So is the case with spouse also. ?But we get a clear signal, when it comes to our career choice. We quickly realize that choice made by us are correct or otherwise. Even though decisions are made much later, the realization about job satisfaction. We should be happy that here at least we got a definite answer. Fear of known is better than fear of unknown. The very first stage of Decision Making is Problem Definition. Matured people realize that almost all or many have this problem and therefore we are not loners. When we know that there are more people have the same problem like us, we tend to get ?little relieved. Those who agree with this can proceed to read further. But we cannot rest here, only with the solace, that we have company of others, in not having so much passionate jobs. Here we need to face a bitter truth. When you are in a job, which you do not like, the only possibility is to attempt “start liking” your job. For that we need to specialize in a branch, which is closely connected to your existing function. For example, Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Regional Sales Management, Key account Management, Customer Relations etc., Lateral Movement to become Subject Matter Expert is a practical way of achieving Job satisfaction, when compared to looking for yonder green. Whenever there is a challenging assignment pop up in areas of your liking, you need to volunteer and give your best shot. For example, I was working as an officer, Accountant, Manager of a leading Public Sector Bank in Branch, Regional and Corporate office levels. Even though I was reasonably successful, I thought I was not keen on Banking, Accounting, Auditing related works. I felt that I was good at Communication, Training, Human Relationship Management and Public Relations. I started equipping myself to become a Faculty in Staff Training Centre by joining ISTD. Because of my passion for training, I could complete the course in record time but the Faculty position was eluding me due to continuous upgrading of Faculty position. But with the support of my superiors, I got lot of opportunities to hone my Faculty skills by working as Adjunct Faculty. Simultaneously I worked for my Post Graduation In HRM and when I was elevated to the Corporate Office, I decided to quit a well paid and secured job to pursue my passion. Lady luck also smiled at me to become a Head-HR of a Indo-American Joint venture and got exposure to all aspects of HRM – Recruitment, Training, Compensation, Industrial Relations and Compliance. As a HR head, I used my power (not misused) to get into training executives, officers and Managers of the whole group. In fact, my expertise in Learning & Development earned me career progression faster as DGM/GM/Director of a bigger umbrella of the same group. At one point of time, I felt ?bigger than the organization (definitely not) and therefore quit to start a soft skill training Organization. Even though initial days were little difficult, word of mouth of customers enabled me to reach milestones – one after another – 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 programs in a short span of less than 5 years. ?One of my training programs for senior management called “Street Play Management” has opened the doors in another well known Indian Company, finally resulting in my taking over as HR Head of an Organization with 2000+ employees, which I enjoyed a lot. After superannuation, I went back to Soft Skill Training again. Now that I have left behind milestones of 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 programs, I am still passionate enough and inching towards 1000, which I am confident of reaching sooner or later. I am sharing this flash back with Linked-in numbers to instill confidence in the minds/hearts of younger generation.? This job gave me an opportunity to travel all over India and the Middle East, to meet younger generation, to disseminate my experience and exposure to Professionals of different Industries and above all a sense of satisfaction that my life is meaningful. Having worked in Public/Private and Consulting Sectors, I am more eligible to suggest following for upcoming professionals. Competition is increasing at a rapid speed. Professional life is going to become more hectic and complex, due to advent of modern science, especially Artificial Intelligence. Vertical career advancement may become much slower and we will be pushed into Lateral movements, whether we like it or not. Now is the time to take a fresh guard. Identify your passion, make efforts to specialize/qualify in that area, improve your Risk Propensity and take challenges in your or allied fields of excellence and enjoy work life balance I wish all of you a little bit of luck, which is also essential. Currently I have positioned myself in Mumbai for completing some training assignments but not averse to travel anywhere. Please feel free to talk to me and I assure you that you and your team will never have an opportunity to regret. I have completed two decades in L&D but still learning...................
