21 Ways to Double Your Value

The Culmination of a study undertaken by Stanford and Northwestern Universities asking Americans who they admire and the 27 traits  most admired in the best leaders and companies

The authors want to know how do these 27 traits apply to you as an individual?

Here are some of them  – honest, forward, looking, inspiring, competent, caring, fair-minded .cooperative, imaginative, ambitious, courageous

What do you want to be admired for? Do you know?

How do these traits impact your engagement and enjoyment at work?

Oscar Wilde suggested, “Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.”

Gallup found that 67% of people hate their job or feel disengaged… how long do you invest in your goals or what time do you spend doing meaningful things – not a huge amount…?

You don’t have to be perfect to do something great.

When you meet and study the world’s highest achievers, you realize that most started out flawed in their thinking, lacking skills, and often humiliated by inadequacies. Worse yet, there is always a choir of critics delighted to trumpet their failures along the way. No one is perfect, and no one who has ever done anything worthwhile ever has been. High achievers focus on having impact and making a difference no matter how incomplete they are. The only thing you have control over is getting better every time you play.

Becoming a success is not about having talent; it’s about taking action to create value for others

There are great singers waiting tables and brilliant engineers toiling away in mechanic shops..The difference between those who “make it big” and those who don’t is the ability to create value for your customer, boss, and your family.Having a bubbly personality is nice but people admire you more for your willingness to be accountable.

Media consumption is being used like a drug to medicate our sense of isolation and lack of purpose.

There’s something deeper happening, too. Media studies indicate that people develop a sense of affiliation with celebrities they don’t know because they spend so much time reading, thinking, and talking about them. But you know plenty of people who can and will help you if you can train yourself to focus more on positive interactions than on mind-numbing and time-wasting ones.

If you want to be inventive you have to be willing to fail quickly & often & use the learning as power

There’s a big difference between guilt and shame…

Stanford researchers pinpointed “guilt versus shame proneness” in individuals by asking a group of complete strangers to fill out an online personality quiz. The participants rated how they would react to specific blunders, like spilling wine on the cream-colored carpet at a co-worker’s housewarming.. Guilt proneness predicted an individual’s likelihood to be seen as a leader even more than having an outgoing personality

Customising Value; The new competitive edge…

  • 3D prototypes for new products just a few moments after they imagine them.
  • When you can print out plastic, metal, and wooden products on local laser printers—and test many different options to see what really works for customers—you will save months and millions over making one expensive prototype, manufacturing millions, and then hoping it will sell.
  • As our means of production become more automated, customized, and local, the competitive edge for the 21st century will no longer lie in how big your company is but in how well you can accurately assess what customer’s value and build exactly that.

The time and cost associated with tooling products is plummeting. This means you can get exactly what you want, when you want it, and with less cost, raw materials, and shipping. Businesses that can quickly determine what customer’s value and fill that need will be the winners

Giving criticism is like eating salted nuts; it’s hard to stop after just one.

His research reveals that delivering a criticism sandwich—specific praise before criticism and general praise afterward—is the wrong way to diffuse its impact. Because it takes so much brain power to analyse criticism, we don’t remember anything said before it (this is called “retroactive interference”). But after hearing criticism our minds and bodies snap to attention, improving our memories (or “proactive enhancement”). So anything you say after criticizing someone is generally remembered.

Over time engaging in digital media inhibited their ability to read human faces and get along ….

  • You could argue that much of the online media we consume is harmless entertainment. However,
  • Nielsen reports that U.S. monthly time spent on social networks and blogs topped a billion hours,
  • With another half a billion hours spent on online games.
  • Americans spend 15 million hours a month on entertainment news sites alone—
  • Almost half of that at the office.
  • And each week the average American consumes about 40 hours of combined TV and online content—that’s a full-time job!

Sorry everyone! Research has found multitasking severely limits memory, accuracy, & productivity …

“The surprise was that even here at Stanford he found multitasking severely limited participants’ memory, accuracy, and productivity in performing tasks compared with students who did one thing at a time. In fact, their concentration was damaged by multitasking. They lost their ability to focus on any one relevant issue, and didn’t perform nearly as well as people who kept their eye on one meaningful outcome at a time.”

  • When we don’t spend much time focusing on our passions, they’re often difficult to identify. But we all have passion; it’s a matter of discovering it.

What if you don’t have passion?

They found six fundamental factors that determine when passion is present in yourself or any of your MVPs.

  1.  Flow: If you lose track of time while doing or thinking about something, you’re often in a state of passion.
  2. Failure: You will persist despite failure when you’re passionate.
  3. Free: We’re not suggesting that you work for free, but the truth is that you go above and beyond when you’re passionate about the outcome
  4. Distraction: Pay attention to what is distracting you; it could be a passion.
  5. Against the Grain: A passion is something you’re drawn to even when your MVPs are not. It’s something you’d like to do even if it’s not popular.
  6. Irritation: When things you love are violated you become upset. Your irritations may well be your passions …

The most admired people are those who focus on giving more value that they expect from others…

Whether you’re running a household or managing a multinational corporation, you may feel you’re already generous with the MVPs in your life. You’ve always had the best of intentions and, after all this time, you deserve their applause for all that you do for them. But it can’t be all about you until it’s also all about them. Some call this Servant Leadership. Being valued by others is about finding the intersection between what you can and want to contribute and what your MVPs need.

In their research they learnt that an honest leader is most sought after but more importantly they want them to be able to do the job.
