Are you doing this unintentionally?

Hi Reader,

As an introvert, I tend to be hyper-aware of microexpressions that others might not, such as a furrowed brow that suggests they might be confused or the pursing of their lips that suggests they might not be happy. Over time, I discovered that observing these body language cues is key to making interactions more meaningful.

?? Tip of the Day

Pay attention to non-verbal cues. One I see often is crossed arms both in-person and on video.

Crossed arms typically mean someone feels uncomfortable, upset, or defensive (crossed arms are a self-soothing pose, like hugging yourself). While crossed arms don’t always mean someone is feeling a negative emotion, observe yourself the next time you cross yours as it may be implying you’re feeling something you’re not to the person you’re speaking with.

For more tips on body language, check out this chapter from my LinkedIn Learning course, “Leading With Positivity.”

It’s been a busy few weeks. I had the opportunity to present at organizations like Microsoft, Zynga, LinkedIn, Airbnb, Northrop Grumman, Indeed, and several others! We discussed tactical ways to build executive presence through the 3Cs: Communication, Career Brand, and Credibility, and also ways to build influence by implementing my RAVE Model.

Q: What should I do? I've been with this company for a year. They rarely promote staff to managerial roles. I took a job I don't like hoping for a promotion.

Body language is so important! Most of my work is virtual, and I try my best to make sure that the people on the other end of my virtual calls have their videos on.
