In our increasingly connected world, cybersecurity is more important than ever. Despite this, many people are still making basic mistakes that leave them vulnerable to cyberattacks. It does not matter if you have the most sophisticated measures in place, it is these basic mistakes that cost us the most. If you recognize any of the following habits in your behaviour, it's time to make some changes or pay the price in the long run.
Using Public Wi-Fi Even If It Is Password-Protected
Public Wi-Fi networks, even when password-protected, are not safe for sensitive activities. Most enclosed places like hotels and restaurants have public wi-fi that is password protected but think about it. Do you prefer the idea of sharing your sensitive financial information like account PIN, etc over a network used by probably 100s of people at the same time? How sure are you that the password has not been cracked by some malicious actor who can have access to the information you share on this public network? Cybercriminals can easily intercept data transmitted over these networks using tools like packet sniffers. Avoid accessing banking apps, email, or other sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi. If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a VPN to encrypt your data and protect your privacy.
Not Turning On MFA Even If Your Password Is Complicated
A strong password is a good start, a complicated one at best but it's not enough on its own. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a layer of security, requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone be it through an email, SMS or phone call. This makes it much harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts, even if they manage to steal your "complicated" password.
Leaving Your Bluetooth, Airdrop, and Wi-Fi On When Not in Use
Leaving Bluetooth, Airdrop, and Wi-Fi on when you're not using them can expose your device to unnecessary risks. Hackers can exploit these features to gain unauthorized access to your device without notice. Turn off these features when they're not in use to minimize your risk. Also, connect to devices you can trust when they are turned on and used. Connecting to devices you do not know or trust can aid hackers in accessing your devices easily.

Leaving Your Credit and Debit Cards and Passports Unattended.
Leaving your credit and debit cards in easily accessible places increases the risk of theft and unauthorized use. Always store your cards securely and report any lost or stolen cards immediately to your bank to have them blocked. Additionally, consider using RFID-blocking wallets to protect against electronic pickpocketing. Electronic pickpocketing involves stealing personal information without physical contact. As such leaving your cards and passports unattended to makes them easy targets for these criminals.
Posting Pictures in Real Time
Sharing your location or posting pictures in real-time can make you a target for burglars and cyberstalks. This information can reveal when you’re not at home or provide clues about your daily routine. Instead, wait until you’ve left the location to post pictures and turn off geotagging on your photos to avoid revealing when and where the photo was taken.
Conclusion
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can significantly improve your cybersecurity and protect your personal information. Stay vigilant, use the available security tools, and always prioritize your online safety. Remember, a little precaution goes a long way in keeping you and your data secure.
