Are You Defined By Retail?

The voice inside my head was deafening.
"Retail is all you can do Tom"
I felt like I had tried everything to get out.
I applied for tons of jobs, most I never heard back from.
I'd spent a decent amount of time on my CV getting it updated.
But still, no one was prepared to take a chance on me.
I was ready to throw in the towel.
No one wanted someone with only retail experience (apart from retailers).
Or that's how it felt anyway.
A lot of people ask me "who's going to take a chance on me when I've only got retail experience?"
And I completely understand why they feel that way.
It's how I felt too.
But I've learnt a lot since those days that's for sure.
We are not defined by retail.
During our careers, we've learnt a ton of new skills.
It might be management, sales or customer service skills to name a few.
You might have applied these skills IN RETAIL.
But...
Isn't good customer service the same whatever industry you're in?
Managing and leading people isn't any different either right?
And we sell thousands of products in retail, so again why would it be any different selling a different product or service?
Your knowledge might be around retail, but how long did it take to pick that up?
I doubt it took you long.
I changed careers and moved into the welfare to work industry here in the UK.
It is nothing like retail, instead of selling baked beans I'm helping disadvantaged people back into work.
What's the same about that?
But managing people, being organised, being self-motivated and passionate about what I do.
It's the same skills and behaviours, but a different setting.
Do you feel like retail might be all you can do too?
Then maybe you're focusing on the wrong type of jobs.
Perhaps should focus on jobs that play to your strengths (remember those skills I mentioned earlier?).
It'll be those companies that take a chance on you.
And why wouldn't they?
They are hiring someone that has the skills they want.
But Tom, they always mention that I need experience in that particular industry?
Don't they just.
But why wouldn't they?
In an ideal world, they want the perfect candidate.
But do you really think this person exists?
Don't you think they would be doing the job already if they did?
How much retail experience did you have when you joined?
I bet you had zero!
So don't get put off by an employer asking for experience.
Do you need a little help figuring out the best jobs to apply for?
If you are reading this and thinking...
Yeah, I've not had much luck, maybe I am going after the wrong types of jobs?
Then why haven't you joined my 5-Day Retail Escape Event already?
>>You can join by clicking here<<
You've probably seen a few posts about this already.
I'm kicking off this FREE 5 Day Event on 23rd of March.
It's all online so you can take part in the event whenever you are in the world.
I'm going to show you which jobs you can go after that WILL take a chance on you.
And you know why? Because they are begging for the skills you've got!
Exactly what I've been talking about in this post.
So it's time you banish that voice in your head.
Retail isn't all you can do.
And I'll show you exactly why on the 23rd.

4 年People can often underestimate how many skills you learn when in retail and how those skills are transferrable. Retail is often seen as a last resort for careers but it is fantastic way to really develop life skills that can help you in your future career choices.
