Are you creating lore at your organization?

Lore is more than the stuff of myths—it’s the fabric that binds a culture together. It’s memorable, shared moments that fuel highly effective collaboration and help people feel connected to each other and the business. While ‘lore’ may seem like something relegated to fantasy novels, the truth is that in today’s hybrid work environment, this type of meaningful connection is the very thing that keeps people engaged, committed, and excited to move work forward.?

How do you create organizational lore? Here are a few ways:

  • Invest in team experiences and offsites. Whether you are remote, hybrid, or fully in-office, investing in great experiences where people can come together to problem-solve, connect to the business, and learn together will deepen trust, establish high expectations, and craft memorable moments.

  • Create simple ways for people to be recognized. Regular recognition of people and their contributions goes a long way. While formal awards programs are important, don’t underestimate the power of simple, routine tactics - monthly spotlights, public shout-outs, and ‘caught doing good’ messages?are the things that put trust in the bank and are what people talk about later. ?
  • Incorporate unique rituals that connect people to each other and your business. Whether it’s starting out with an opening question that everyone answers, using distinct language that’s unique to your company, or even creating your own organizational emojis, these rituals create a sense of shared context and belonging. Just be sure to define and remind your team of their meaning, especially for newcomers.
