If you could go back in time, what would you tell yourself about applying for the Rhodes Scholarship?

We're in the middle of the application window, which can be a nerve wracking time for those applying for the Rhodes Scholarship. Whether you are thinking about applying, in the midst of your application, or waiting to hear back from the selection committee, here is some advice from Rhodes Scholars who have recently been through this process!

"You may find it challenging or even uncomfortable, but the discomfort deep within you is inching you toward a place better than you ever would have expected." - Qi Lei (China & Brasenose 2021)

"Don’t hesitate to apply. You may find it challenging or even uncomfortable, but the discomfort deep within you is inching you toward a place better than you ever would have expected. And when you will look back on this application experience, all you will see is magic."? - Qi Lei (China & Brasenose 2021)

"My advice is to find a balance between over preparing and being your spontaneous self." - Omar Alshangiti (Saudi Arabia & Lincoln 2021)

Thinking back, one thing I did wrong was that I under prepared for the interview (for example did not do any mock interviews), which is generally not a good idea. But this was mostly because I was not at all expecting to be selected, which also kind of helped me stay relaxed and not over perform. So, my advice is to find a balance between over preparing and being your spontaneous self."? - Omar Alshangiti (Saudi Arabia & Lincoln 2021)

"No one can tell you you can or cannot apply for the Rhodes. It's your choice to make, your life to live, so you better get cracking and seize the day." - Brian Wong (Hong Kong & Balliol 2020)

"I didn't get the Rhodes the first time I'd applied. So the advice I'd give -- for Rhodes or other things in life (in general) -- is this: No one - absolutely no one - can tell you you can or cannot apply for the Rhodes. It's your choice to make, your life to live, so you better get cracking and seize the day."? - Brian Wong (Hong Kong & Balliol 2020)

"Enjoy the process!" - Elizabeth Nwarueze (Nigeria & Trinity 2021)

"I would tell myself to fully enjoy the process again! I do not regret doing so at all."? - Elizabeth Nwarueze (Nigeria & Trinity 2021)
