You Closed The Door And Left Me In the Snow

When I was a puppy you rescued me and told me how much you loved me. You brought me home and then chained me outside. You fed me table scraps and cheap dog food and when it was hot outside you often forgot to fill my water bowl. I still loved you and hoped you would play with me, maybe throw a ball, or take me for a walk but you did not.

When you kicked me because I jumped up on you trying to show you my love you never took me to the vet and now I walk with a limp. You took me for a ride one day and I was so happy, but you left me on a dirt road on a cold and snowy November night.

I found my way home to tell you I was sorry for whatever I did. I barked at your door and when you opened the door I gave you my best happy look. You closed the door and left me in the snow. I don’t understand why you can’t love me.

I slept under the porch that night. It was cold and the dirt damp, the wind blew hard all night and snow drifts were building up around the house. I could hear you walking on the floor and I heard you pull out a chair to sit at the kitchen for dinner.

I slept under the porch that night. It was cold and the dirt damp, the wind blew hard all night and snow drifts were building up around the house. I could hear you walking on the floor and I heard you pull out a chair to sit at the kitchen for dinner. The smell of food drifted to my nose, the hunger ate away at me and ice caked on my coat, but you didn’t seem to care.

It was a long cold winter, one filled with cold and hunger. Loneliness filled my heart wishing for just a petting or a kind word to know that someone cared. I hung on during the cold freezing nights often wanting to let go and be free of the misery of a loveless life. What did I do to you that you would toss me out in the cold and forget me.

It was late winter. I woke to find the sky was cloudless and clear. I could feel the warmth of the sun and I crawled out from under the house to go to the creek for water and maybe find something to eat. In the distance I could hear laughter and another dog barking. They were by the creek playing and the he was sharing his food with the dog. I timidly walked over wagging my tail, and the boy reached out with food. It was so good, then he reached down and rubbed my head and knelt to hold me, tears filled his eyes. He cared about me and I knew that he would take me home and never close the door leaving me out in the cold. He even gave me a name, Fluffy, for my long hair.

Point Of View

So many dogs are adopted then abandoned, left to their own devices totally unprepared to deal with life on the streets. My daddy and his brothers went to that house and banged on the door telling the owner to never go near the dog again. He lived with us for many years staying with my daddy after I was gone. Fluffy was never far from my daddy. They could always be found on the front porch, daddy carving something with his knife, and Fluffy asleep by his chair.
