Are you in the Climate Closet at Work?

Are you in the Climate Closet at Work?

This edition of the Leading Change That Matters is an invitation to a conversation about Climate Change - in the workplace.

Just look at the headlines of these two recent research-based articles published in Nature Communications:

Americans experience a false social reality by understimating popular climate policy support by nearly half.
To create serious movement on climate change, we must dispel the myth of indifference.

That's why I'm stepping out of the climate closet - because I actually KNOW that at least two-thirds of you are concerned. That's what new research says.

In fact, even though the vast majority of people are concerned about climate change, we feel uncomfortable talking about it - at work and sometimes even with our family and closest friends. (Even if sustainability is in our job description!)

But if we don’t talk about it, we can’t address the very real changes we face collectively and globally.

So, let’s talk about it.

That's what I've been doing for the last 5 Fridays, and I have two more sessions lined up - including today at 3pm EST.

Please register here .

Sunrise in winter. I wonder how many more winters we will be able to sustain downhill and cross-country skiing in Central NY.

Join us for a 1 hour interactive discussion where you will:

  • Learn the surprising new statistics about climate change concern, including eco-anxiety
  • Understand the research on why we DON'T talk about climate change, and why this needs to change
  • Get ideas on what you can do to turn your eco-anxiety into eco-efficacy
  • Imagine what you might want to do to become an effective climate changemaker in your workplace (and what might STILL stop you).

Here's a slide deck preview of the climate conversation and content we will cover in 1 hour.

We will also be watching 1 - 2 short videos, to activate and broaden our perspectives.

Whether climate change is new passion, or you've been in this space for years, please bring your questions, your wisdom, and your willingness to grow your "changemaker" muscles.

I hope you will join us today.

If you would like me to deliver an activational keynote, or join one of your team meetings - reply to this message, and let's see what's possible.

Let’s grow our courage and impact together while helping to shrink our collective environmental footprint.

Join me in "stepping out of the climate closet" at work.

Step by step. Word by word. One conversation at a time. Many conversations every day.

Hope to see you soon,

Melissa

Enabling Operational Sustainability in Buildings and Cities with smart platform and IoT device utilization training and consultation with a focus on AI integration

I couldn't agree more! I come from the operations and technology side of commercial buildings and believe the interaction between HR, tenants and operations has been missed for far too long. We need to not shy away from concepts of sustainability that could lead to reduced personal comfort. Today, the expectations of tenants and owners do not align with the achievable realities in bldg mechanics and most of this is driven by a culture of being spoiled by immediate comfort responses over the past 50+ years and until we make everyone in an organization aware of climate impacts generated by comfort demands, we will have trouble achieving the required reductions. As an fyi on where the USA sits in this relating to more progressive countries, in the Netherlands they have a general and recommended winter time setpoint of 66 degrees and when occupants are chilly they layer on clothing rather than call in a complaint that increase energy use to remediate. Rant over for now lol!
