Infectious diseases are caused by various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites. These diseases can spread from person to person by direct contact, bedding, water, foodborne illness, or aerosolization of infected particles in the environment and through insects (mosquitoes) and ticks.
?In late 2019, the SARS-COV-2 pandemic seriously threatened human health and social-economic development. Looking back to human history, several infectious diseases, such as smallpox, plague, and Spanish flu, all significantly impacted human society. Until now, influenza virus, rabies virus, respiratory syncytial virus, human papillomavirus, and many other infectious viruses are still constantly threatening the safety of our life. Therefore, the current scientific and medical industry is focusing on developing safe and effective vaccines
?But we as hoteliers should be most worried about the spread by bedding aspect. There is little chance of becoming ill from your bed in your home unless you let many other people share your bed. Putting lovers aside, contamination can happen today by letting rooms in your own homes for bed and breakfast use.
Hoteliers, Hotel Groups, and the Cruise Ship Industry have not done enough to protect guests and housekeeping staff
?It all goes back to the fact that pillows and specific bedding items cannot be sterilized by traditional means, using bleach and other chemicals or steam hot water.
For everyone to be safe, no traveller or guest on a cruise ship or in a hotel should be required to put their head on an untreated, unsterilized pillow that a previous person’s head has deposited masses of pathogens onto and into. They should also be protected from dangerous chemical residues left after treating pillows and bedding with chemicals and bleach. No one should be given a pillow with dangerous metals and not be aware of the risks.
Pillows are the worst for carrying pathogens because people breathe into pillows, cough, sneeze, snore, dribble, and generally excrete fluids and pathogens from the lungs, eyes, ears, and mouth. The pillow is like a lung; it breathes out when you put your head on it and breathes in when the head is removed. So, each time a pillow is used, the user deposits the contents of their lungs and head into it and breathes in what the previous client left when removing the head.

?Those transfer methods ensure a pillow is packed with every germ, bacteria, and virus a person has. Many perfectly fit people carry these pathogens and leave them on and in pillows which another person with a lesser active immune system will then contract and become ill from, perhaps resulting in death. It is not just the pillow; blankets are rarely washed. Bedspreads and comforters are seldom washed and never sterilized. The guest deserves better, and so does the hotel staff. All the staff is at risk, particularly the front-line staff, such as the room attendants and laundry operatives.
Recently, I recently employed a lady researcher to survey several leading hotel chains and she reported that they were not taking appropriate action to protect
Some in the industry I have spoken with have said, “look, no one has complained, so why should we spend time and money on something that no one is aware of nor complains of.” As difficult as that is to believe, that is the attitude of the majority. Another group leader told me, “Our advisers in the government health departments and a medical group who wrote our operation and cleaning and hygiene rules
