Are You Chasing the Right Dream?

Are You Chasing the Right Dream?

“I want to grow in my career. I want to make more money, be more successful.” These words, filled with ambition, are often what I hear when I first meet a coachee. And why not? It’s natural to dream big and aim high. One of my coachees, let’s call her Priya, came to me with a larger-than-life vision for herself. She wanted to climb the corporate ladder, earn more, and achieve all the markers of success society so often applauds.

We started working together, setting clear actions to align her efforts with her vision. Over the months, though, something interesting began to happen. Her questions started to change. They went from “How do I get that promotion?” to “Why do I feel so overwhelmed?” and “Why is there no time for my daughter?” She started expressing how her passion for social service and music had taken a backseat due to work.

At this point, I introduced the Wheel of Life, a tool to help her map out what truly mattered to her. As she filled out her wheel and listed her top priorities, an eye-opening realization dawned on her. Career and money, the two goals she had been relentlessly chasing, were far lower on her list of what truly mattered. Topping her list were her family, her passion for social service, and her love for playing the guitar.

In that moment, Priya said something that became a turning point: “Looks like I’ve been chasing the wrong dream. A dream set by my parents, peers, and managers.”

This realization was profound. She recognized that no amount of money, fancy cars, or impressive designations could fill the void of not living a life aligned with her true values.

I then asked her, “What is it that you really want?” Silence followed. She finally said, “I need to think about that.” And so we paused for the day.

Two weeks later, Priya came back with a decision that surprised even her. She requested a step down at work. Yes, a technical demotion. This decision meant a lower salary and less responsibility, but it also meant she’d have the freedom to spend evenings with her daughter, play her guitar, and immerse herself in activities that brought her joy.

Today, 18 months later, Priya’s life looks completely different. Her daughter now performs on stage, with Priya by her side, sharing their mutual love for music. They’ve found a unique way to connect and deepen their bond. Priya is healthier, happier, and living a life that aligns with what truly matters to her.

This journey reminds me of an important question for all of us: Are you chasing the right dream?

Sometimes, the goals we pursue are not truly our own but are shaped by societal expectations or the aspirations of others. Coaching offers a space to reflect and uncover what genuinely matters to you.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or simply curious about whether you’re on the right path, I’d love to help you find clarity. Let’s work together to identify what will make you happiest and most fulfilled. After all, life is too short to chase the wrong dream.
