It’s that time of the year when we look at ourselves to be renewed and set some new goals.
New Year resolutions can be made easier.?Read on if you are interested.
The first question is:?Is setting New Year resolutions a bad thing??I don’t think so. We need that reflection and renewal time, for sure. It gives us the fresh mindset to start afresh.
But?why is it so tough?to stick to your New Year resolutions?
Most of our resolutions require changing our habits and that is the tough part. Habits take time to be cultivated, incorporated, calibrated, re-calibrated and then made part of our lives. It is a change in our programming, to the way we get used to do things over the years. It requires tremendous amount of will power, mental energy and conscious efforts to change.
Is there an easier way to do this??Try my recommendation below:
I suggest you first read the whole exercise, then read again to start the exercise.
It will be difficult to choose one goal when we may have 10 on our list. However, this is the first step and probably one of the hardest steps. You should try listing all your goals and then picking the most important one out of those. Yes, JUST ONE.
2. Break this goal into 4 or 5 high level steps with intermediary targets.
The intermediate targets could be 52 by Jan 31st, 55 by Feb 28th….60 by June 30th?etc.
Example 02 - Goal: I want to be promoted as a VP this year
The intermediate target list could be
Set target dates for each of the above steps.
3.Now pick the date,?Jan 31st?and see which of these sub steps can be expected to be done by then for you to achieve the master goal you have set for yourself.
4. Start focusing on achieving this deadline. Nothing else! Just this.
One goal, a one-month sub-target
5. Identify an accountability partner.
If you are a very disciplined and highly self-motivated individual, you may not need an accountability partner. If you are not very disciplined, you may want to identify an accountability partner you can discuss the goals with, and set realistic deadlines which YOU can ACHIEVE. They can give you the support and motivation to achieve your realistic target. And?it is important that your partner is aware that it is your target, not theirs.
Who can be an accountability partner? Your friend, colleague, parent, spouse or a professional coach.

6. Write?your BIG Goal and the Jan 31st?target date on a notepad.
YES, this is important, please write it down.
When you write this statement, it should be in present tense. If we use the previous examples again:
I am happy and grateful that I am 52kg on Jan 31st, 2022 at 8am.
Or
I am happy and?grateful?that today, on Jan 31st?2022 9am, I have completed all my conversations with my manager and HR and identified all the skills I need to acquire or sharpen to get promoted to VP
Tear the sheet of paper and?put it on your desk where you can see it every single day. It can be even your laptop/desktop picture. It has to be visible every single day.
7. Every day,
a. Read out the above statement
b. Write down on your notepad, what can you do that day to achieve the Jan 31st?target.
Even if it’s the simplest task,?write it down and focus on executing just that one task for that day.
8. Celebrate your success. When you achieve the task for that particular day, share and celebrate the progress you made. If there is no one you feel comfortable sharing your progress or achievement, send me an email or a WhatsApp message?. I will be happy to hear from you and celebrate along with you.
Now read the above statements a couple of times and then start writing your goal on your notepad. You will see how transformation happens.
Btw,?do you have to wait till Jan 1st?to do this? Of course not, START TODAY!?This can help reduce the pressure on yourself.

3 年Johncey George (ICF PCC), there is an interesting book on similar lines "The one thing" by Gary Keller. The tag line says, If you will chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one. Overall, the concept is nicely put together and this works, I have myself tried.
