You are a Catch, Now Start Acting Like It!

So often we are told to be humble.

For years I would not share my wins or accomplishments with others for fear that someone would troll me. Then one day, that changed...

Excerpt from my new book Overcome Your Villains:

Why not? Because, while I saw many men post about their awards or their big speaking gigs, I just knew that if I did, people would attack me. I was convinced the haters would make a point of showing up and calling me out. All my excitement and gratitude would be taken as proof of my lack of humility. I wasn’t willing to risk it.

When the day of the event arrived, I was more nervous than normal. Instead of my standard talk or intro, I had decided to give a more personal talk. I had decided to share that as a child I struggled with poverty, low self-confidence, and a lack of guidance. Like anything, the first time you do something new is the scariest, just because you haven’t done it before. There is a fine line between fear and excitement, and I needed to keep telling myself: I feel excited for this talk!

The next time you feel fear, make the decision to say out loud how excited you are instead. Watch the shift happen.

There is a fine line between fear and excitement.?

I somehow made it through the speech, and I waited for the crowd’s revulsion I was certain would come after my deeply personal revelations. Here was this high-powered corporate executive revealing that she grew up poor and had lived in a trailer.

The crowd loved it.

Today I have spoken about so many low moments and shared so many things I used to feel shame about that I don’t even think twice about it. But it took practice—it was hardest the first time, and each time it has gotten easier. Today I look forward to it. That is because of what happened next.

While I was making my presentation and barely keeping it together, I didn’t noticed what was happening in the back of the ballroom. In the far corner, my then-assistant, Kim, had leaped up and started livestreaming my speech on Facebook. She hadn’t told me she was going to do it, probably because she knew I would have never agreed to it. Maybe she knew it was the little push that I needed to put myself out there to the next level. Regardless, I am so grateful that she did.

I finished the talk, and as I walked back to my table, so many amazing women told me how moved they were. Some told me of their own challenging moments in life and how my speech connected with them and reminded them that they are not alone. I knew right then that the risk I had taken was the right one.

Stepping into your fear is always the right answer.

We began packing up and heading out to get into our cars. That’s when I glanced at my phone and noticed that I was getting more notifications on my Facebook app than I had ever seen. “What’s wrong with Facebook?” I wondered.

I opened the app, and to my surprise I realized what Kim had done. Not only that, but hundreds of people were responding to it. Before I could read their comments, I wanted to hide under a table and find a way to delete what she had done. I immediately thought the worst. Hide under a table? Am I four years old or forty-three? I knew deleting the livestream wasn’t going to make it go away—I needed to face the music and look at the post.

I jumped into my car with one of my colleagues, Carolyn, who needed a ride to the airport on my way home. I told her what was going on with my Facebook app, and she was cracking up. Carolyn had been a supporter of mine for a long time, and while I was in panic mode about the livestream post, she was absolutely comfortable with it. She was able to see that my fears were not real and that everything was going to work out much better than I expected.

I handed her the phone as I was driving and cringed as I asked her to read the responses to me.

“So proud of you!!”

“Go Heather!”

“You are an amazing speaker!”

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me about this. I would have been there to support you!”

“Why didn’t you invite me? I would have loved to be there live!”

“Heather, seeing you do this tells me I can do this too. Thank you!”

“You are shining girl—keep shining!”

“Thank you for sharing your struggles. It makes us all feel like we are not alone.”

There were so many amazing comments, but one in particular made me reframe my whole attitude that posting about your wins is a negative thing. The next comment came from a single mom who had been holding herself back. She said that seeing me up there on stage showed her that she too can go for more. She thanked me and told me to keep an eye on her because I would be seeing something big from her soon.

That’s when I finally understood it. It’s my duty to post and share about my wins, just as it is my duty to share about my fails. When I reframe it in that way, I give others the chance to see the potential within them.

It’s is not about me. This is so much bigger than me.

If your post about an achievement can inspire just one person, then it’s worth it.

Make it about that one person and not about you.

What are you proud of that you haven't shared yet? What one person can you inspire by sharing your wins?

Give it to me in the comments below! You are a catch, now start acting like it!
