I have been hearing a lot about burnout lately. People are telling me they are at CAPACITY.?
Burnout is certainly not a new concept, but the last few years have exacerbated our feelings of being burnt out and stressed out.
Here’s what I’ve seen from working with a few hundred private clients.
The burnout around your career well-being is real. It shows up with changes in our relationships, in over and under-consumption of what’s good for us, and we tend to want to escape or chill-out whenever possible.
Here’s what it may look like for you:
You keep trying to power through, but you are losing your edge.
Maybe you think you will quit, but that's not available to many of us.?
You power through because you're an achiever and driven for more.
You don't focus on what success looks like; you look towards those around you to help you define what success looks like.
You don't celebrate your wins and feel you gotta get to the next ‘stage’ quickly.?
Suddenly, everything you deliver is just "good enough" because great feels too far away.
So what do you do to change this?
You redefine success, leverage leadership, and nourish connections.
Redefine Success is so often tied to external factors like work.
When we define it externally, our feeling of success can change within a few minutes. It’s a roller coaster. How can you expand beyond your bank account and title? Question your thoughts.
Many believe that you can have a life OR a great career.?
That’s not true. It’s not an either-or situation.

Leverage Leadership. As a leader, you have the opportunity to talk about a broader idea of success.
There is a corporate climate and corporate culture.
Sometimes, the climate is stressful, but it blows over, and the culture can withstand it. The culture is what stays around, and it’s what you need to help create.?
As a leader, it’s your responsibility to create a culture of well-being, and you start with yourself. You begin to talk about your habits around wellness, mindset, health, and decision-making as vital skills for the job. These are the soft skills that have always been essential (everyone was just confused). You have to do it for yourself first and share your views on well-being; when you do, you’ll empower others.
Nourish Connections.
Networking and creating relationships around what you do professionally. The people who impact your well-being most are those you spend the most time with.
Who are you spending your time with?
Who do you want to spend your time with?
Who's in your inner professional circle?
Who needs to be??
Next, physically release the stress to move through burnout.?
Stress always comes in two waves. Your body will take care of the stressor, but you have to process the stress response and complete the stress cycle.?
There are two ways to complete the stress cycle.
1) Mindset: questioning your thoughts, rebuilding beliefs, and practicing meditation are just a few mindset tools proven to help you complete the stress cycle.
2) Physical: Exercise, walk, laugh, love affection, creative expression, breath work, tense muscles, and release muscles to allow the neurochemicals and hormones to flush from your body.
I want to help you learn how to reduce burnout and develop the confidence and strategy you need to secure your future with a job that reflects your talents and who you are. Developing your career strategy, knowing your skills, your strengths, and what your professional brand stands for is the fastest way to ease burnout. Your result? You’ll create hope, confidence, and conviction.

All important reminders, thanks Jill! With regard to the physical side of stress waves, I thought it would be helpful for people to know that there is no predictable timeframe for when the physical manifestations of stress might kick in or how long they will last. In leaders with high capacity, they are often deferred and kick in only when a stressful period is long since past. This can be really frustrating, but the prescription that you've given here to get through it remains the same. Be patient, and do the things that need doing for restoration!
