When a crisis hits, "you can surge people, but you can't surge trust," the general said. "You can surge equipment, but you can't surge trust. You can surge all kinds of things, but you can't surge trust, that trust is built over years." ~Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen (ret) Mark A. Milley
*I am taking a slightly different approach with this article and providing my deeper thoughts / analysis via video or podcast (you chose).
A few opening comments:
My boss and teammate Ryan Richardson continuously reminds us that we cannot and will not surge trust. So, we deliberately and intentionally focus on building trust daily, and in the seemingly minute moments and situations.
How about we don't wait until there is a difficult situation or topic to be discussed; instead, let's have regular conversations often enough that we build trust so that when the "difficult conversation" is required, it is simply just another conversation for us ... we cannot surge trust, so let's build it now. ~ Ryan "RY" Richardson
You can’t surge trust in difficult times! on 21 June 2024, we hosted a PTSD awareness ruck & discussion here at Maxwell AFB, bringing together a community dedicated to mental health support. Grateful for the strong turnout and meaningful connections made - a truly proud moment!
It's surprising how many discuss mental health but don't engage in events like these. Let's transition from words to action - your presence is impactful. It's all about connecting, strengthening, and inspiring your tribe!
After this "walk" with my tribe, I felt compelled to share a deeper analysis on connection.

5 个月Hi Richard, love this combo of media ?? Very interesting to think of trust in your field, one of the most fascinating. For the sake of brevity and practicality, its definitely best to have this perspective of earned trust over time as a default. If a little more nuance is afforded, Trust can actually be 'surged'. (Apologies if you went into this deeper analysis in your podcasts!). According to the Theory of Swift Trust, a group can surge trust in temporary teams with finite lifespans, shared goals, and reliance on coordinated activity. They engage as if trust is already present, validating it over time. It's also useful to look at it from both sides. From the perspective of the Trustor (Being Trusted) and Trustee (Trusting Another). As the Trustee, you might be inclined (biases, assumptions, worldviews) to trust others in specific contexts, and not in others. The Trustee may also have an immediate intuitive / 'affectionate' knowing to trust someone, without much logical reasoning behind it. Keep building the connection ??
